Google Drive remains the user’s preferred choice for sending files, media, and documents. Mainly due to cross-platform availability, generous 15GB free space, and seamless sharing experience. When someone sends files through Google Drive, you can access them from the ‘Shared with me’ menu. Here’s how you can save such shared files to your Google Drive account.
Google doesn’t store shared files in your Drive account. It is an intentional act to separate your personal files from those received. You can always move shared files to your Google Drive account or download them for offline use. Check it out in action.
If you want to change a shared file, we recommend that you save or make a copy of it first to your Drive account. If you have edit permission and directly make changes to shared files, those edits affect all collaborators and can cause confusion.
We cover all three platforms here. We’ll start with Google Drive for the web first and move on to the mobile app. Start.
Step 1: Go to Google Drive in a web browser on your computer.
Step 2: Sign in with your Google account details.
Step 3: Click the ‘Shared with me’ tab from the sidebar.
Step 4: Select a file you want to save in your Google Drive account. You can press the Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) key and select some files.
Step 5: Right click on it and select Make a copy.
Step 6: The cloud storage service will make a copy of the files on your Drive home.
Google Drive cannot make copies of folders. You can only make copies of individual files. Drive will rename them ‘Copy of .’ [file name]’ in your account. When you save or copy large videos from the Shared With Me menu to the My Drive menu, the process may take longer, and sometimes, the copying process fails as well.
Please note that copied files will take up space on your Google Drive account. You need to make sure you have enough Google Drive space before you copy shared files. When you complete the steps above, you will be the owner of these copies. You can now make changes to the file (without affecting the original shared file) and share them with others.
We recommend that you check the file size before saving those files.
Step 1: Open Google Drive in your desktop web browser and right-click the shared files in your Drive account.
Step 2: Click View details.
Step 3: You can check the file size, owner, date created, opened and modified the file.
If you want to edit shared files in another program, you need to download them to your PC or Mac. This is also a useful trick for uploading shared Google Drive files to another platform like OneDrive or Box.
Step 1: Open Google Drive on a browser and navigate to the “Shared with me” section in Google Drive.
Step 2: Right-click on the file and select Download.
Google Drive will create and download compressed files on your PC.
The above trick saves files shared on Google Drive to your home. If you want to save them to a specific folder or computer (connected to your Drive account), check the steps below.
