Our world is full of information – in fact, a lot of us can be information overloaded. As a result, taking notes has become more and more important, both to remind us and to open our minds. I know it really helps my mind to know that I can organize all the stuff that piles up in my head into words and notes.
The evolution of the cloud has brought us a service that links all of your notes together into your account and automatically updates the latest versions of your notes to your device. It’s called Evernote and is probably the most popular note-taking tool out there.
What is Evernote?
Evernote is a note taking app. Its strength lies in its syncing capabilities — it has apps available for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android, and BlackBerry devices. These apps sync with each other over the internet to deliver each new note or new edit on any device. This means you will have constantly updated notes and you will not be left behind with old variations or outdated information.
We’ve previously looked at the Chrome extension that integrates Evernote into your web browser. In this post, we will go into detail about what this tool is and how to use it.
How and where to access Evernote
You can access Evernote through the apps I mentioned before. You can simply download and install the apps from the website’s home page, then sign in to your Evernote account and view your notes from there. Conversely, you can also access your notes through Evernote’s main website and view your notes from there.
Evernote for Windows
Evernote for Windows shares the same standard Evernote interface, which is quite intuitive.
The Evernote user interface is divided into three sections: in the leftmost section 1 we can see the existing notebooks. It is useful to divide notes by notebook in case of different subjects or different work projects. You can also right-click a notebook and add it to a stack, which is a collection of notebooks. In part 2, we see the list of notes in that current notebook. In section 3, we see a preview of the note and associated metadata like tags and source URLs.
I like how the little details work, though: for one thing, editing existing notes is much easier with the Windows client. There’s also a pop-up editor that you can activate by double-clicking on a note, which is pretty convenient.
Similarly, you can choose to create local notebooks on your Windows client that are only stored on your hard drive and not shared with the cloud. This can be useful for secret plans to take over the world or other things you can’t afford to share over the internet.
You can also choose to export your notes to a different format, making it easier for you to modify or share.
You can choose to share your Evernotes by posting a custom URL to your Facebook or Twitter feed. You can also email this custom URL to your friends and people you think might want to read it.
If you want to collaborate with users, you can actually share certain notebooks with them. However, you’ll need a premium account to allow others to edit your notebooks, which means you’ll need to pay $5/month or $45/year. When you do this, you will be able to empower other free and paid users to edit your work.
It’s simple to share a notebook, just navigate to the top of your Evernote app and click the Shared tab. Then click Manage Shares, and from there select the notebook you want to share!
Practical application
Evernote makes a lot of sense for work projects as well as for taking notes in the classroom. That means you’ll be able to sync all of your work online, and you’ll be able to make changes and modifications as needed, even when you’re on the go. You can maximize your productivity!

Evernote Peek and Apps for Other Devices
The Evernote family extends to many other devices. In fact, there’s actually a great variation app called Evernote Peek that helps you learn. The premise is for the iPad 2’s smart case to hide the answer while you try to explain the meaning of a word or answer a question you posed to yourself.
It’s a great tool for self-testing and even provides audio hints.
Evernote is becoming a note taking app. Its live sync capabilities are excellent and its user interface is easy and natural. If you haven’t tried Evernote yet, you’re missing out! Have a look at it now. I know for sure that I take notes faster on the computer and now I never have to worry about losing a copy again. Also, I can recall a version of my BlackBerry notes!
