YouTube continues to be the preferred video streaming service for most users. Due to recent server-side changes, you may have trouble finding the option to change YouTube video quality. Here’s how you can convert video quality on mobile and web.
After a recent update, YouTube has hidden the ability to change video quality in the advanced menu. It’s a small change, but it could make it difficult for the average consumer to find the option they’re looking for. It will save you internet data, but if you are working with unlimited internet data, you should not deal with 480p or 720p (HD) video quality in the first place.
We’ll start with the YouTube mobile app and then move on to YouTube web to change the video quality.
YouTube App for Android and iPhone
By pinning your default video quality to 480p or 720p, YouTube avoids unnecessary strain on their servers. A single device doesn’t make much of a difference, but counting millions of devices, they make a good impact on the YouTube server.
As a consumer, you shouldn’t worry about that. You can easily watch your favorite creators in 4K with the advanced options menu. This is the way.
The steps below apply to YouTube for iPhone, iPad, and Android. You get the same UI everywhere. For reference, here’s how you can change the video quality on the YouTube iPhone app.
Step 1: Open the YouTube app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Play the video.
Step 3: Tap the three-dot menu at the top.
Step 4: Select Quality.
You have four options to choose from.
Auto: This is the default setting and it will adjust the video quality to give you the best experience that suits your situation.
Higher image quality: This will enhance video quality at the expense of more data.
Data Saver: It will reduce video quality and save data in the process. This is recommended when you are working with tight data packages.
Advanced: This option will allow you to choose a specific resolution for playing videos on mobile devices.
Step 5: Tap Advanced.
Step 6: Choose 1440p or 2160p and you will quickly see the resolution of the video more clearly.
Anything above 1440p would be overkill for a mobile phone. If the uploaded video supports 60fps for a specific resolution like 1080p, you should choose that speed instead of a higher resolution with fewer frames per second. You’ll notice a smoother, better video playback experience on your phone.
YouTube on the web
YouTube hasn’t had a problem with the web version yet. That means the ability to change the video quality on the web remains the same.
Step 1: Go to YouTube on the web and start playing the video.
Step 2: By default, YouTube chooses the streaming quality based on your home or office internet speed.
However, your internet speed is likely much higher than what YouTube thinks, and it can perfectly play videos at higher resolutions.
For example, whenever we tried to play a video at 100 Mbps Wi-Fi at our office, YouTube started playing the video in full-HD resolution. Wi-Fi networks can fully stream video in 1440p (QHD) or 2160p (4K) quality.
Step 3: Click the Settings gear at the bottom.
Step 4: Select Quality.
Step 5: Choose higher video playback from the list and you should use sharper video quality.
Change video quality options
You don’t have to choose the video quality every time you open YouTube. You can set video quality options from the Settings menu. This is the way.
Step 1: Open the YouTube app on your iPhone or Android.
Step 2: Tap the profile menu at the top.
Step 3: Go to Settings and select Video Quality Options.
Step 4: Select mobile or Wi-Fi network.
Step 5: Tap Higher image quality and close the menu.
After doing this, YouTube will play the video with a higher image quality. There is no way to change YouTube web video quality options.
