How to Turn Off Your Active Status on Facebook

Do you spend a lot of time on Facebook Messenger? While your friends may find that endearing, you want a select few to be unaware whenever you’re active. Fortunately, you can turn off active status in Facebook Messenger, and others won’t see the green dot that indicates your active status.

This guide shows you how to turn off active status on Facebook Messenger and continue chatting in peace without feeling like you are being monitored.

How to hide your activity status on Facebook on desktop

Turning off your active status on Facebook will prevent your friends from seeing you online and when you were last active. If you tend to use Facebook Messenger on your desktop, here are the steps you need to take to disable your active status. In our testing, we found that you need to turn off your active status on all devices where you’re signed in if you want to go completely offline on Facebook Messenger.

Step 1: On your PC, open the Facebook page in the browser of your choice.

Step 2: Click the Messenger icon in the upper-right corner of the page. Select the three-dot icon at the top of the Search bar.

Step 3: From the options that appear, select the ‘Turn off active state’ feature.

Step 4: Facebook offers granular control over who can see when you’re online, so you have 3 options to choose from:

  • Turn off active status for all contacts: If you don’t want anyone to know when you’re online, choose this feature.
  • Turn off active status for all contacts except: This option hides you from most of your contacts with a few exceptions.
  • Turn off active status for some contacts only: An option that allows you to appear online only to select the contacts that you need to sort manually.

Select the option that works for you and press the OK button.

Facebook can be a trouble maker, sometimes showing you online even when you’re not. Even with the active state turned off, this can still happen. If you want to ensure that you don’t appear online when you are not online, we recommend that you sign out of your account. Here’s how you can do so on PC.
