Notification Center Today View is the new Dashboard. It started with iOS 7 and made its way to Yosemite. We have already told you what Widgets in iOS 8 are and how they work. It’s the same story on Yosemite.
Console widgets on OS X were (and for some, still are) a way to integrate small web objects, scripts, or informational windows at a glance. With Yosemite, that responsibility falls to the Notification Center widgets. How can you get synced lyrics from a song you’re playing in OS X or iOS right in Notification Center? Read to find out.
How to Enable Widgets in iOS 8 and Yosemite
Widgets are not standalone applications. When you download and install the apps listed below, the respective add-ons will be installed.
To activate a widget, scroll to the bottom of the Today view in Notification Center and tap Editor. You will see a green color’+’ next to the new add-on available. Tap it and the utility should be up and running.
How to download lyrics on iOS 8 using the default music app
We’ve talked about MusiXmatch’s awesome FloatingLyrics plugin for Android. There is something similar, although limited for now for iOS 8. Download the app and activate the extension as outlined above.

Now go to the Music app and play a song. MusiXmatch’s utility will scan the currently playing song and display the synced lyrics.
How to download lyrics in Yosemite using iTunes
The app we’ll be using to get the lyrics in Yosemite’s Notification Center is Lyrical. It costs $0.99 and is available on the App Store. An alternative called iTunes Lyrics Widget is available for free but it didn’t work for me.
The app we’re using is merely an interpreter for the saved lyrics. Unlike MusiXmatch on iOS 8, it will not search for lyrics from online databases.
This means that you will need to embed the lyrics for each song in your iTunes library for this feature to work. On the other hand, it will work even if you are not connected to the internet.
Use Singer Song Reader to save lyrics to iTunes
Singer Song Reader reads the currently playing song and allows you to embed the lyrics in iTunes.
Open the app and switch between sources from the bottom row. When you find the lyrics, press the shortcut Cmd + WILL to save the song to iTunes.
I know what you’re thinking. What if you have thousands of songs in your library? If you’re a little tech-savvy, you can install AppleScripts to automate it for you. The details are discussed in this Reddit thread.
There is also a manual way to add lyrics. Right click on any song and click Receive information. You will see a table of lyrics. Paste the lyrics in there and press ALRIGHT for saving.
Once the Lyrics are ready, all you need to do is enable the Notification Center widget.
Lyrics will find embedded lyrics and display them along with basic playback controls like play/pause, next/previous, volume slider, and star rating.
How do you usually check the lyrics?
