At least be grateful that Google told you why the apps weren’t working. Now everything will be fine if one can update Google Play Services easily. But not so. If you search for Google Play Services in the Play Store, you won’t find it. Well then, how to update it?

Do not worry. It’s not rocket science. Here you will find four ways to update Google Play Services manually on your Android phone. But before that, learn a little about Google Play Services.

What does Google Play Services do?

Google Play Services are system services packaged inside an app that keeps your device running smoothly. These services are responsible for operating the Google Play Store and other applications. If Google Play Services isn’t working properly, you’ll have problems with other apps as well. That is, they can crash, cause errors, or in some cases even fail to launch.

It is a core system software that works in the background. You won’t even notice that it’s installed on your phone (since it doesn’t appear on the home screen or in the app drawer) unless it starts working. You will want to uninstall it at this point, but cannot do so. It can only be updated.

Check out different methods to update it.

1. Update from Google Play Store

Yes, it doesn’t show up directly in the Play Store. However, use this link to view the Google Play Services app page. Once there, tap the Update option (if available). That will update them on your phone.

2. Uninstall updates

Although you cannot completely uninstall Google Play Services, you can remove its updates. When you do, the application will return to its original state or original version. Doing so will force your phone to update automatically.

Here are the steps:

Step 1: Open phone Settings and go to Apps/Application Manager/Installed Apps.

3. Disable Google Play Services

Another way to force your phone to update Google Play Services is to disable it. For that, follow step 1 and 2 of above method (uninstall method). Then, on the Google Play Services screen, tap Disable (if available). Most likely it will be greyed out.

Step 1: Open phone Settings and go to Security. You’ll find it under different names on different devices, such as Security & location or Lock screen & security. If you can’t find it, use the search in Settings to find the security option.

If none of the methods mentioned above update Google Play Services on your phone, try updating it manually. To do that, you will need to download its APK file.

Here are the detailed steps:

Step 1: Open the Google Play Services page on APK Mirror, one of the trusted places to download APK files.

Step 2: Scroll down and under All versions, tap the latest version. Play Services also has a beta version. Avoid them.
