The latest update to Google’s popular video calling app Duo brings a handy feature that lets you share photos with your friends. The highly requested feature has been in development for a long time and it is finally available on version 56 of the app.
If you’re using the latest version and want to share photos with anyone in your contacts, but don’t know how, then you’ve come to the right place. In this article, I’ll show you how to share photos on Google Duo, along with some other helpful tips that will help you get the most out of the app.
Well, sharing photos in Google Duo isn’t rocket science. It works pretty much the same way Android photo sharing works in general. Just follow these steps to share photos on Google Duo:
Step 1: Open the photo you want to share in the Gallery app on your phone, tap the share button, and then select Duo from the share menu.
Step 2: Your photo will then open in an editing window where you can add text to your photo by tapping the A icon in the top right corner. You can even change the color of the text by tapping the colored circles just above the keyboard.
Once you’ve added the text, just click Next to return to the editing window. You can also scribble on photos by tapping the icon right next to the text input icon. And while scribbling on photos, you can even try out different pens by tapping the three icons below.
Step 3: After you have scribbled and added text to the photo (or not), just tap the Next button in the bottom right corner.
Step 4: You can then select up to 5 different contacts from the contact list in the following window by tapping the checkbox next to the name. Then tap the Send button and your photo will be shared with your selected contacts.
Your friends will receive a notification on Duo about the new photo. They can see the photo by tapping the notification, and they can even access it from your contact page in the next 24 hours.
They will also have the option to call you back or reply with their photo. And in case they don’t want the photo to expire after 24 hours, they can tap the download icon in the top right corner to save the photo.
Now that we’ve figured out how to share photos, let’s check out some other helpful tips.
How to turn off Video Preview in Google Duo
By default, Google Duo displays a video preview of the person making the call on the recipient’s screen. While it’s a pretty handy feature that lets users know at a glance who’s calling, it might not be the best feature if you just like surprises.
Thankfully, there’s an easy way to turn it off. Just follow these steps to turn off video previews in Google Duo:
Step 1: Tap the menu button in the top right corner of the Duo main screen and select the Settings option.
Step 2: In the settings menu, select the Knock Knock option for this device and then disable it in the next screen by tapping the toggle at the bottom.
It’s as simple as that. Now, every time you make a video call on Duo, the person on the other end won’t be able to see the video preview.
Duo is more than just a video calling app that lets you share photos with friends. You can even use it to share short video and voice messages if you don’t want to sit through the entire call. Just follow these steps to share voice and video messages on Duo:
Step 1: Swipe down on the Google Duo homepage.
Step 2: Tap the record button to record a video or switch to voice by swiping right and then tapping the record button.
After you’ve recorded a few messages, just select a contact and hit send.
How to disable Duo calls
Wondering how to receive Duo calls on your phone even if you haven’t signed up for the service? Well, Google’s App Preview Messaging feature is the cause here. And if you turn that off, you’ll turn off Duo calls entirely on your phone. Here’s how you can do it:
Step 1: Go to the Settings app and select Google settings.
Step 2: In the next window, tap App Preview Messages.
Step 3: Turn off the setting by tapping the toggle in the top right corner.
Turning this setting off will ensure that others can’t share content or send you messages on apps that you don’t have installed on your phone.
How to block contacts in Google Duo
Now if you just want to block one contact, instead of blocking all incoming calls you should follow these steps:
Step 1: Go to the contact list in Google Duo, select the contact you want to block, and then tap the menu button on the contact page.
Step 2: Select the Block Number option and you are ready to go. Now you will not receive any unwanted video calls or messages from this particular contact.
A picture is wandering around
Get the most out of Google Duo by sharing photos, videos, and voice messages on the app. Just make sure you’re running the latest version, otherwise you might not find some of the settings we mentioned above.
