A number of different symptoms can occur when the battery percentage meter on your Mac is incorrect. The most obvious thing is that your computer randomly shuts down and dies before the battery percentage hits 0 percent or even goes low. The second is the feeling of fast battery drain or reduced battery life.

If you suspect that the battery on your Mac is showing an incorrect percentage of remaining battery life, try some of the following at-home solutions to reset or recalibrate the battery. Otherwise, an appointment with the Genius Bar at your local Apple store may be required.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
The System Management Controller, or SMC, on your Mac is hidden in the operating system and groups different functions together related to display, battery power, startup, shutdown, sleep, etc. something is wrong with your battery indicator, resetting the SMC can refresh the battery percentage so it’s correct again.
How to reset the SMC depends on the type of Mac you own. If you have an older Mac laptop with a removable battery, the first thing you’ll want to do is turn off the computer and disconnect it from the power source. Remove the battery. Then, press and hold the power button for five seconds while the battery is still low. Reinsert the battery, connect the laptop to a power source, and turn it back on.
If you have a newer MacBook model that doesn’t have a removable battery, the process is a bit different. Turn off the computer, but plug it into a power source while it’s off. Press the button Switch, Control, Options and all the power keys at once — the first three should be the ones on the left side of the keyboard.
Closely monitor the percentage of battery your Mac shows compared to your usage over the next day or two and see if resetting the SMC fixes the problem.
Calibrate your Mac battery
Keeping your battery calibrated is not only important to keep your Mac’s battery percentage accurate, but it’s also important for years of optimal battery health and charge cycles.
Calibrating the battery is easier than you think. Basically, you should just use your computer as you normally would, except let the battery show off every little bit of its power. First, plug your Mac into a power source and charge it to 100% capacity. Once fully charged, leave it plugged in for about two hours to get it at 100 percent charge.
Unplug your Mac and start using it, letting the battery drain naturally. Eventually, the battery will weaken, so let it drain until the computer automatically goes to sleep. Once it has been in sleep mode for a few minutes, plug the charging cable into your MacBook and recharge the computer to 100 percent.
This whole cycle is what calibrates the battery. After the MacBook is recharged, unplug the charging cable and watch as you use the machine to see if the battery percentage is more in sync with your usage.
Tip: To get a closer look at your battery usage, open the Activity Monitor app on your Mac. Click Energy at the top and scroll down below for graphs and battery stats on current energy impact, remaining charge, time remaining, and battery drain over the last 12 hours.

When all else fails, make your battery someone else’s problem! The geniuses behind the Genius Bar at your local Apple retailer might be able to fix the battery accuracy problem pretty quickly.
They will most likely deal with it with one of two methods depending on the cause. The first solution is to replace the battery. This is covered if you’re under warranty, including a one-year limited warranty if it’s a manufacturer defect. On the other hand, the price varies by MacBook model.
$129 is a replacement battery for any MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook, and 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro without retina display. $179 replaces the battery in the 17-inch MacBook Pro and $199 includes the 12-inch MacBook and the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro retina.
This price includes the battery and repair service, i.e. Apple Geniuses recycles the old battery and installs the new one for you.
If you don’t need to replace the battery, Geniuses still has tools available to run tests on your MacBook and diagnose any problems, so it might still be worth your while to head to the Apple Store. The cost to fix any diagnosed problems will vary based on cause and process.
