Microsoft’s game streaming service Mixer (formerly Beam) is doing its best to catch up with arch-rival Twitch. While Mixer made it convenient to play games from their Xbox or PC without the complicated setup process, the service was never really successful. Popular Fortnite streamer Ninja’s recent switch to Mixer is helping to lubricate the wheels of the platform.
One of the best things about using Mixer on Twitch is that it lets you sign up with your Microsoft account. So you can access Xbox as well as PC and stream with the same login. But for some reason, if you haven’t signed in with your Microsoft account when you first play, the platform will create a separate Mixer account for you.
In that case, you’ll have two different accounts for the service, but there’s an easy way to fix that. And that is what I will say in this article.
How to link a Microsoft account to a mixer on your PC
If you have separate accounts for Microsoft and Mixer, just follow these simple steps to link them together:
Step 1: Go to the Mixer website and log in with your Mixer account.
Step 2: Now click on your profile picture in the top right corner to open the menu.
Step 3: Here, select the Account option to switch to your account settings.
Step 4: In the next page, click the Link your Microsoft account button.
Step 5: Enter your Microsoft account credentials in the window that pops up afterwards.
That will link your Microsoft account to your Mixer account. You can verify that by selecting the Link your Microsoft account button, which now says Unlink your Microsoft account.
If your Microsoft account is already linked to another Mixer account, you will get an error. You will see a pop-up message — Unable to link Microsoft account: Please sign in with the Microsoft account associated with this Mixer account.
In that case, you’ll need to first follow these steps to unlink your Microsoft account, and then link it to the Mixer account you want:
Step 1: Go to the Mixer website and sign in with the Microsoft account you want to link.
Step 2: Now click on the profile picture in the top right corner to open the menu.
Step 3: Here, select the Account option to switch to your account settings.
Step 4: In the next page, click the button Unlink your Microsoft account and then select Unlink in the dialog that pops up afterwards.
You will then see a message stating that your Microsoft account has been successfully unlinked.
Step 5: Sign out of Mixer and then sign in with the Mixer account you want to link using the Alternative ways to sign in option.
Step 6: Go back to the Account settings and again click the Link your Microsoft account button.
Step 7: Enter the credentials for the Microsoft account you want to connect to Mixer.
Your Microsoft account will now be linked to your Mixer account. Like before, you’ll be able to verify that by selecting the Link your Microsoft account button, which now says Unlink your Microsoft account instead.
In certain cases, you may be asked to link your Microsoft account with a code. You will receive a code on your registered email ID. Just enter the code and click the Link Microsoft Account button. Once you’ve successfully liked your Microsoft account with Mixer, you’ll be able to sign in to the service using either of their credentials. All your data will be synced across both accounts, and you’ll be able to access it seamlessly from your PC or Xbox.
I came across several Reddit threads about users having issues linking/unlinking their Microsoft account to their Mixer account. While these solutions should work for most cases, there’s still a chance you’ll run into some other problems. If that’s the case, I recommend contacting Microsoft support or Mixer support.
Link your Microsoft account to Mixer
Now that you have a clear idea of how you can link your Microsoft account to Mixer, there are a few other things you should know as well. Connecting accounts will not have any effect on your Mixer username or Xbox gamertag. And you’ll need to set up two-factor authentication separately for Mixer, even if you’ve already set up two-factor authentication for your Microsoft account.
