If you own a PS Vita and have hacked it to run other games and emulators, then you know that the moment you update your Vita’s firmware, all the hacks and emulators you have on it will be lost.

But you can’t keep using the Vita’s current firmware like that – Sony will force you to update if you want to access the PSN Store (as pictured above).
So what if you want to play a game you bought but haven’t downloaded on your PS Vita? Or what if you want to hack your Vita but you haven’t downloaded the mining game you need?
In theory, you simply cannot download games directly from the Vita’s Download List because of these blocks that Sony imposes. However, there are several methods to get games on your PS Vita even if you are running an older firmware and Sony blocks you from the PSN Store.
Read on to learn how to do this.
1. Remote download
Important Note: This method tends to only work for a few weeks after each new system update. So you will only be able to use it for a short time after Sony updates the Vita software. If you cannot use this method, see the next method below.
Step 1: First, log into your PSN account on your computer and buy the game you want, or go to the Downloads List if you already bought it. There, on your Downloads List, find your game and click Download… button.
Then on the pop-up panel that appears, click Download button where it says PlayStation Vita.
Step 2: Now, turn off your PS Vita (make sure its Wi-Fi is on) and then turn it back on. After a while, you’ll see a notification bubble at the top right of your game display as it downloads to your PS Vita.
Transfer with your PS3
If you try to download the game to the PS3 and transfer it from there to the Vita, it will ask you to update the firmware as before. But there is an alternative to this method using the qCMA application that does not require an internet connection.
This method is less well known and a bit more labor intensive (and PS3 of course), but on the plus side it works (although the latest Vita firmware seems to have temporarily disabled It).
Step 1: First, on your PS3, go to the PSN icon and select Account Management select. Then choose Transaction Management.
Step 2: On the next screen, click Download list and then start downloading your game to PS3. When ready, keep the game in its bubble and leave it there for the time being.
Now go to your PS Vita.
Step 3: To get started, on your PS Vita, go to Setting and turn off Wi-Fi, located below Network. Alternatively, you can also activate Airplane mode to be absolutely sure that all wireless signals on your Vita are turned off.
Once you do that, turn off your PS Vita, wait a bit, then turn it back on.
Step 2: Now, on your computer, open the qCMA application (used to transfer files to PS Vita) and plug your PS Vita into the computer via the USB charging cable. Then on your PS Vita, open Content management and choose Copy content.
Once you do that, unplug the USB cable from your computer but leave the other end connected to your PS Vita. If an error message like the one shown below pops up, you can simply ignore it.
We do this to open the connection to your PS Vita without Sony’s online check forcing you to update the firmware.
Step 3: Now bring your PS Vita (cable plugged in) to your PS3 then plug the USB end into it. Then dismiss the error message and choose to connect your Vita to your PS3 via USB cable as shown on the screen below.
Step 4: Then just continue with the regular game copying process from PS3 to PS Vita and transfer your games there.
Finished! Now you know how to download and get games on your PS Vita even if the PSN store is blocked because your Vita is not running the latest firmware. Enjoy! And of course, don’t forget to check out our other entries if you want to know more about how to hack your PS Vita.
