When browsing the internet, most of us stumble across a bunch of neat effects and finishing touches that websites tend to add to improve their presentation. Now, while the beautiful finish of some of these elements might make you think they’re hard to complete, some of them are actually pretty easy to create if you have the right tools on hand.
This time, we’ll learn how to use Photoshop to overlay transparent text on any image or background to achieve a slideshow quality effect.
Start.
Step 1: Let’s start by opening your image in Photoshop.
Once open, go to the Layers panel (picture below), right click on it and select Duplicate Layers…. Since my image was named “Background”, the duplicate layer was named “Background Copy” by Photoshop. We will use those names from now on.
Step 2: On the Layers panel, click the button shown to create a new layer. After you create it, drag it to position it between two other existing layers.
Step 3: Now we will fill the new layer with white. To do so, make sure to click it on class palette to choose it first.
Once selected, on the menu bar (or just the menu in Windows), go to Editor menu and select Pour until it’s full… select.
On the next window, below Content choose White as the color and leave the other options as they are. The new layer will now be filled with white.
Step 4: With the new layer created and filled with white, select the “Copy Background” layer on the Layers panel to add your text. Once selected, click Typing tool and then select the font you want and its style and size in the options bar above the main window.
Then click on the image and type what you want on it. Make any changes you want to the text until you’re happy with it, then click Tick button to accept text.
Step 5: Now, with the text written on the image, on the Layers palette drag the Text layer below the “Background copy” layer as shown below.
When you’re done, click on the “Copy Background” layer. Don’t panic if the text doesn’t show up. This is because it is “overlaid” by the “Background Copy” layer.
Step 6: Now create a final effect to make your text transparent and then place it on top of your image/background. Thankfully, all of this can be done with one simple command in Photoshop.
click Class menu on the menu bar and select Create Clipping Mask select. You will see that your text has finally been overlaid on your background image.
Now, let’s add a simple effect to complete the image.
Step 7: Select the text layer on the Layers panel and then click Effect button.
This will bring up the Layer Style dialog box. It is set by default on Shadow effect optional, but feel free to play with it until you find an effect you like. In this case, I’ll be using the Drop Shadow effect, which adds a nice visual touch to the finished image as you can see below.
Hope you found this guide useful. As you can see, the results look pretty amazing and definitely show how using just a few simple commands in Photoshop can yield powerful results.
