Using Google+ Image Editor to Adjust, Add Effects to Images

title 2

We could upload images to Google+ all day, but that won’t get people excited and sharing them. You need something special, unique, and interesting about your photos to drive engagement. One way you can easily do this is by using its built-in image editor. No need to pull out GIMP, Photoshop or even Windows Paint to make your edits – just use Google Plus.

We’ll take a look at some useful tweaks that any of us can use easily. Simply upload your images and apply changes before or even after you publish them. There are two image editing sections Google+ uses, named Communication And Creative adjust. We’ll make some changes to a few images and see how strong the effect can be.

Adjust/Edit Images in Google Plus

Upload an image and click Editor button at the top.

The setting to adjust the image is to the right of any open photo for editing.

There are two types of adjustments: Basic and Creative.

Basic Adjustment

Basic adjustments include the following:

  • Adjust the picture: Create depth and vibrancy by adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation, gloss, or warmth.
  • selective adjustment: Fine-tune parts of your photo without altering others using control points.
  • Detail: Enhance details and improve image sharpness. You can make adjustments manually or choose from a range of preset adjustments.
  • Crop & Rotate: Resize or remove distracting parts of your photo using standard aspect ratio or freehand crop.

We’ll start with adjusting an image. You can choose any preset to see the live preview on the left. Each preset is characterized by different adjustments. For example, the Pop music presets brighten the entire image while reducing shadows and increasing saturation and contrast.

Adjust any individual filter for a more customizable look. Apply the settings and switch to selective adjustment select. Click More control points and then click anywhere in the image. A large circle will appear, defining the selection area. Click and drag the size, brightness, contrast, or shadow button icons to the left and right to decrease or increase each level. Remember that this only applies to the selected area contained within the circle.

Now we will choose Detail parts and increase the structure of the entire image. This gives us an interesting paint feel. The more you increase the structure, the more exaggerated it seems. This can really lead to a nice effect.

Here’s a before and after image of the same after we adjusted some basic settings. It takes less than 2 minutes to get this dreamy look.

Creative tuning

Ad tweaks include:

  • Black and white: Quickly make images black and white.
  • center focus: Draw attention to the subject in your photo by blurring and adjusting the brightness of the surrounding background.
  • Dramatic: Add style with custom effects specifically for your photos, from delicate textures to extremely artistic effects.
  • frame: Add a stylized border to the photo for the perfect finishing touch.
  • Tilt shift: Creates a narrow focus area designed to simulate depth of field, common in the Miniature Landscape view.
  • Classic Movies: Make any photo look like vintage color film from the 50s, 60s, or 70s.
  • classic: Make your photos look really vintage with light leak effects, scratches, film style, etc

Upload another image in Google Plus, but this time scroll down Creative tuning part.

Quickly turn a vibrant, modern image into one that looks decades old.

Image59

Do this from Black and white part. I selected the dark filter (lower left preset) and then adjusted Cereal amount around 50.

center focus make a picture pop out like you won’t believe. It does this by blurring everything but the focus on which you set this filter.

Image61

Adjusting the center brightness makes the focus brighter than the rest of the image. This, combined with the blur effect of other parts of the photo, will naturally make the focus great.

Have fun with the different filters in the creative adjustment section. Continue through these settings to add a border or the old classic look.

Here’s our original compared to the final result after editing through only creative adjustment settings:

You can see how your photos can come alive and unique. You can make multiple changes to the same image and have some different results appear almost completely different images. Take your time or just apply a few presets before publishing your images to create incredible effects.
