How to Save 50% Bandwidth while Browsing on Android

Let’s face it, not all of us live in areas with stable internet connections and you have a lot of data needs for everything you want to do. Yes, that is a problem if you live in the countryside but unlike the urban cities much better. Due to congestion, you can’t even get true 3G/4G speeds in some areas.

Opera Max

Opera Max is a new app from the Opera team that wants to help you. The app acts as a VPN, compressing the data you receive on the go. This is especially useful when you are watching YouTube videos or streaming TV shows. The app claims it can cut your data consumption in half. Check out that statement.

How to use Opera Max

Once it’s set up, you won’t have to do much. When you open the app for the first time, you’ll be asked to agree to the terms and conditions and enable VPN access for the app.

For the uninitiated, a VPN connection acts as an intermediary between your device and the internet connection. In most cases, it is used to add an extra layer of security. In this case, Opera is using it to compress the data you’re receiving. It does that first by routing the data to its own servers, compressing it, and then sending it your way. Chrome on iOS and Android does that too.

Once Opera Max is set up, you’ll see a key status bar icon. This means Opera Max is up and running.

The Opera Max app is pretty well laid out. It uses Material Design and presents information in those big and colorful boxes. The app’s home screen will show you a timeline. You’ll see today’s savings, and scrolling down will give you an hourly breakdown of each app usage and data savings. Swipe right to see the same data for the month.

Customize Opera Max

Tap the hamburger menu button to open the sidebar. You will see options for use mobile phone And use Wi-Fi. Tap each option to see a breakdown of the savings for the network. You can also tap the toggle to disable Opera Max compression when using Wi-Fi or data. Touch Disconnect to completely stop the Opera Max service.

Touch Application management to turn off saving on a specific app. Just tap on an app from the left section to turn off the saving feature.

Important points about Opera Max

The most important point to note here is that Opera Max does not snoop on any encrypted, HTTPS, or secure data. This means that if you use an HTTPS website to enter a password or buy something, the data won’t end up with Opera. This also means that it cannot compress all those pages.

This is also the reason why the application does not work with Facebook, Twitter and other similar services that use a secure connection. The app also won’t save any data when you’re downloading something.

The highlight of the app is how it can save you up to 50% data when streaming videos from YouTube or Netflix. I checked the claim and it mostly stands. The data consumed was 38 MB and I saved 40 MB with the YouTube app. I’m not sure if it’s my bad internet connection or Max is throttling but I can’t get the streaming quality up from 240p to 360p. However, if you have a low resolution phone and a very limited internet connection, the 50% reduction in data consumption is still a big deal. Also, because of the way video streaming works, Opera Max only shows estimated savings.

Since most of the data goes through Opera Max, it will show up as the app that takes up the most data and has the most battery life. The app itself is no problem, so don’t worry about it.
