Capture Screenshots with Portable FastStone Screen Capture Tool

Photography tools are not the sole purpose of bloggers and web workers. If you happen to be surfing the web, you can use one to take a screenshot and post it somewhere like a microblogging site or a social network like Facebook.

Of course, you won’t shell out a lot of dollars for the industry-standard SnagIt screenshot software. Instead, you’ll be looking for a small but effective, free but full-featured screen capture tool. find the needle in the bottom of the tank? Not really when you have options like the portable FastStone Screen Capture tool.

The FastStone Capture tool is very lightweight but it has all the features you would expect from a capable imaging tool. Also, I love the fact that I can carry the 1MB portable software in my flash drive and use it anywhere.

Taking screenshots with FastStone is easy and…fast. The program has two components – the capture panel and the FastStone Image Editor. You can capture windows, objects, full screen, rectangular areas, free-selected areas, and scrolling windows/web pages.

This is a snapshot of the floating snapper on your desktop.

Please go to the settings before you start using it. You can use keyboard shortcuts to take snapshots. You can also add some other tools to the panel like color picker and magnifier.

To set up the capture, click any of the capture options. I’m going with a selected part of the site.

1. Drag the crosshairs along to select and capture a web page. The captured screenshot will open in FastStone Image Editor.

2. You can use the Draw tool to mark areas on an image with text, lines, rectangles, ellipses, highlights, and even watermarks on the image.

3. FastStone may lack advanced markup tools like multiple icons, icons, colorful arrows, etc. but you can go back to the image editor and get creative with its limitations. For example, in the snapshot below, I selected an area, inverted the selection (from Edit > Invert Selection), then applied some image adjustments like brightness to remove highlights that I didn’t want in focus. You can also apply visual effects from the Effects menu.

4. The Edge tool allows you to quickly apply effects such as shadows to images. It took me 3-4 steps to do the same thing in Photoshop. Torn Edge effect is also supported.

5. Post it on Facebook or your blog? Why not add a caption to describe the content of the image.

6. Don’t forget to use the Resize tool to quickly choose a standard size or enter your own. Social networks have an image size limit.

Of course, you can quickly email an image to a contact by clicking the Email button.

The bad news is that FastStone Screen Capture (version 6.9) is shareware. The good news is that the portable version (version 5.3) is still available as freeware from this download page. As a fast, lightweight, uncomplicated application, better is better.
