There are many great apps for managing clipboard history on Android. We’ve talked about two of these great apps before. And some Samsung phones even integrate this functionality into their keyboards.
But while there have been applications that manage the clipboard in the past, they are often limited to the application itself. So you have to open the clipboard app to paste the content in. You might as well just use a note-taking app at the time.
Now, with iOS 8, Apple has allowed widgets in Notification Center. While they are not as capable as I would like, developers are looking to break the rules and add powerful features to the widgets.
One such utility is Heapo. It allows you to add tons of clipboard history right from the Notification Center and remember it all so you can go back to it easily. But since this is iOS, the app doesn’t always run in the background, keeping track of all the things you copy. A bit of manual labor is involved.
How to use Heapo
Download the Heapo app and follow the instructions to enable the Notification Center widget. Or check out our guide and list of great gadgets here.
First you need to copy something to the clipboard. Touch and hold any text, drag the cursors to cover the text you need, and press Copy button.
Now slide down Notification Center and your latest clipboard entry will show up at the top of the widget. Besides, you will see a + icon.
Clicking this button will add the clipboard to the Heapo database. Remember the manual labor I talked about before? This is it. That text will now always be on your device and other devices shared over Wi-Fi (more on that below).
The utility shows you the three most recent clipboard entries. So you can tap any of them and the text will show up in your clipboard. If you’re looking for any clipboard entries older than that, you’ll have to open the app (Oh, that’s horrible!).
Share clipboard over Wi-Fi with desktop
The clipboard application is incomplete without cross-platform support. And I’m feeling like a full-fledged app is coming. But right now, there’s a Chrome extension to the rescue. As long as your phone and desktop/laptop are connected to the same network, Heapo allows you to view your clipboard history through any browser.
To enable this feature, go to Setting and activate Share over Wi-Fi. The application will now display an IP address. Open it in a browser and you’ll see all your clipboard history there.
If you are a Chrome user, it is better to install the extension. You will need to enter a “cheer code” to authenticate, but from then on everything should go smoothly.
Keep your clipboard history private: If you’re the type of person who doesn’t want prying eyes to access your clipboard history, turn on Lock on Lock from Setting. This disables access to the widget from the lock screen.
How do you like Heapo?
Of course, Heapo is now a very basic app. Cross-device support with clipboard history notifications and a decent desktop solution would be nice to have, but for a free basic app it solves a very basic problem – managing clipboard – Heapo is not a bad application. How do you think it does? Let me know in the comments below.
