If you’re looking to build a community on Discord dedicated to a particular topic or interest, the first thing to do is create a server. The server is like a forum where you can have separate channels by topic.
Discord has 19 million active servers, with most of them private. Private servers are usually small and access depends on the invitation. On the other hand, public servings often have a larger number of users due to unrestricted access. Any user can create a Discord server for free. Here’s how to create and set up a Discord server.
Create Discord server
Creating a Discord server is pretty straightforward. Discord has app versions for iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac. Or you can use the web version. In this case, we’ll be the Discord app for Windows. The steps are also quite similar to the Discord app on other platforms.
There are two ways to create a Discord server. You can use an existing Discord template or create your own. We’ll show you how each process works below:
Use an existing Discord template
To create a new Discord server from an existing template, follow these steps:
Step 1: Search for the Discord app on the Windows Start menu.
Step 2: Click on the Discord app from the results to launch it.
Step 3: Once the Discord app launches, sign in with your details. If you are a new user, click Sign Up.
Step 4: After logging into your account, on the left side of the window, click the + sign that represents ‘Add server.’
Step 5: Discord will give you the option to ‘Create my own’ or ‘Start from template’. Under ‘Start from template’ choose from options like Study Groups, Games or School Clubs.
When you select a template, it automatically creates certain channels that your server needs. You can also add new channels and remove channels that came with the server.
Step 6: After selecting a template, Discord will ask the server if it’s ‘For the club or community’ or just ‘For me and my friends’. Choose your preferred option or you can also skip the question.
There are some subtle differences between a community server and a server for your friends. The former will come with a Notice or a Rule. You can always skip this step if you don’t need it.
Step 7: Upload an image and provide a name for your server.
Step 8: Click Create to launch the server.
Create your Discord template
Creating your Discord template is not difficult. The only difference from using an existing template is that channels, roles, and permissions are provided based on your theme choice for Discord templates. However, you only get one common channel when you create your template. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Search for the Discord app on the Windows Start menu.
Step 2: Click on the Discord app from the results to launch it.
Step 3: When the Discord app launches, if you already have an account, enter your credentials. If you are a new user, click Sign Up.
Step 4: After logging into your account, on the left side of the window, click the + sign representing ‘Add Server’.
Step 5: Discord will give you the option to ‘Create my own’ or ‘Start from template’. Click ‘Create my own.’
Step 6: On the next window, Discord asks if the server is ‘For the club or community’ or just ‘For me and my friends’. Choose your preferred option or you can also skip the question.
Step 7: Upload an image and provide a name for your server.
Step 8: Click Create to launch the server.
Create Discord channel
As mentioned before, depending on your choice of template, you will have different types of Discord channels. However, the user can decide to create channels.
Create channel catalog
On your Discord server you will find Text Channels and Voice Channels. Text Channels are for sharing messages, pictures and videos while Voice Channels are for screen sharing, video/audio chat and streaming. When creating channels, you have the option to categorize them by Text or Voice.
However, you can also create your own categories. Categories help you organize your channels properly.
Step 1: At the top of the Discord window, click the drop-down menu next to the server name.
Step 2: Click Create Category from the options.
Step 3: Enter the Category Name.
Step 4: If you want the category to be visible to selected individuals, click the toggle next to Private Category.
Step 5: Click Create Catalog.
Step 6: You can create a new channel in the new category or place the mouse pointer over the existing channels and drag them into the new category.
Invite people to your server
Once you’ve created your channel and channel catalog, you can start inviting friends or the public to your server. Here’s how to do so:
Step 1: At the top of the Discord window, click the drop-down menu next to the server name.
Step 2: Click Invite people from the options.
Step 3: Click Copy to get the link on your clipboard.
Step 4: If you want the link to never expire, check the box next to ‘Set this link to never expire’.
Step 5: Paste the link on your favorite platform to share with friends or the public.
Create Discord role
Roles in Discord provide specific permissions to users. For example, moderators can delete messages or ban users depending on the permissions you provide. Adding a new role in Discord is pretty straightforward, here’s what you should do.
Step 1: At the top of the Discord window, click the drop-down menu next to the server name.
Step 2: Click Server Settings from the options.
Step 3: Go to the left pane and click on Roles.
Step 4: Click Create Role.
Step 5: You will see the new role in the list as New Role. In the Display tab, Provide Role Name.
Step 6: Specify the role color.
Discord servers on the second level can also include a Role Icon.
Step 7: Click the Permissions tab and review the 32 listed permissions to select the responsibility for the newly created role.
Step 8: Click on the Manage Members tab and Search for the Member you want to add to the new role.
Step 9: Click Save Changes at the bottom of the screen for your changes to take effect.
