With more and more content available at our fingertips, it’s getting harder and harder to manage it on our mobiles. If you own a Windows Phone 8.1 device, such as a Lumia 630 with only 8 GB of internal storage, it can fill up pretty quickly. Thankfully, you already have that 32GB SD card to use again.
But what is the best way to move files and media between different folders or from internal storage to SD card on Windows Phone 8.1? What about heavy games that take up more than 1 GB of space? Read to find out.
Delete and move files with the file app
For Windows Phone 8.1, MS released a dedicated file management app called Files. It’s not a fully featured app but it gets the basics right.
It’s only for browsing and managing files in Windows Phone 8.1, you can’t manage apps with it.
Up until now, we’ve used Storage Sense to do this, but in my experience, I’ve found the app to be slow and unnecessarily complicated to navigate. The file app improves on both of those aspects.
When you launch the Files app, you’ll see the default media and documents folders next to a square that shows the number of files in it. Tap any folder to view the files.
Long press on any file and select Delete to delete files.
Press and hold and select Move tobrowse for the destination (it could even be an SD card) and tap move here when you like the appropriate directory.
If you want to do this for multiple files at once, tap the . icon tick icon from the bottom options bar.
You can delete (but not move) folders in the same way. But make sure not to delete the system level folder.
Just like deleting, creating a new folder is also easy. Click New folder first icon in the bottom options bar, name the folder and you’re done.
Migrate apps with Storage Sense
Like I said, the Files app is just for managing files. To move apps from internal storage to SD card or delete apps in bulk, you still have to go to storage meaning.
Here you can even choose a default location to install apps, change that to the SD card.
When you have chosen apps + games from the Storage Awareness you will see all the apps listed on your phone. The ones that are blacked out are system level apps that you can’t move or delete, everything else is open territory.
Tap an app, select switch to SD to move apps to SD card or uninstall to uninstall the app. When you move an app to the SD card, the process will start in the background and won’t affect your phone usage.
Use tick at the bottom to select multiple apps. At the bottom you have uninstall to delete apps or move to move apps to SD card.
Also works with SD cards: As I stated above, both the Files and Storage Sense apps allow you to move files and apps from the internal storage to the SD card, use those features if you have one. something like the Nokia Lumia 630 only comes with about 5.5 GB of useful internal storage.
Restore factory settings
Has an incident occurred? Don’t like Cortana? Sell your phone or just want to start with a blank vehicle? always have Restore factory settings select.
From Setting -> About you can click reset your phone for a fresh start.
It will delete all your files, apps, media, installed updates as well as your personal settings and login information, essentially bringing it back to the way you found it.
