Quickly Launch Android Apps, Actions Using Volume Buttons

There’s a faster, better way to do things out there. But not all are worth the effort. This is especially true when it comes to Android. The sheer number of tweaks, mods, custom ROMs, apps, and customizations available is truly mind-blowing.

Most Android users rarely get their hands on any of the above. But there are some tweaks in Android that are really worth it. Things where you pressure your less technical friends or just do it for themselves. I’m talking about Swiftkeys and Muzeis of the Android world.

QuickClick is one such application. It will take some time to set up, but you will reap the benefits for weeks and months to come.

What is Quick Click?

QuickClick (free with ads) is a simple application that allows you to invoke system and application level actions by pressing a combination of volume buttons. You can perform combinations of up to six keystrokes. But 2-4 keystrokes is the sweet spot.

QuickClick runs in the background and once the action is called, it returns the volume level to its original position. So no harm, no foul.

How to set up the QuickClick action

After launching the app, tap Create a new action at the top and select an action. If you tap something like Photoyou will get a screen with options but flashlight will directly take you to the volume sequence screen.

You will see a set of 6 volume plus and minus buttons here. Start mining the combination you want. You can go from 1 button press all the way to level 6. Tap Ready Once completed. Give it a custom name if you want or just tap Complete and you’re done.

What can you do with it?

You can do things like:

Toggle system settings

Enable or disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile data, silent mode, vibrate mode, play or previous song, and even accept or reject incoming calls (but that functionality is a bit poor at the moment) .

You can also unlock your phone from Configuration optionally, bypass the lock screen altogether.

While this function is extremely useful, you can only call the switch once at a time. So there is no way to switch Wi-Fi and Bluetooth at the same time. Also, there is no support for Location (GPS). I hope these features will be added in the future.

Take a photo or record a video

You can assign a hotkey to Photo action, and regardless of the state of your phone – locked or in use – the action will launch the camera app, take a photo, and return you to the original location.

It will even tell you where the photos/videos are stored. You can choose to turn the flash on or off, or let the app autofocus, making the process truly automatic.

Call or text

Do you call your significant other multiple times a day and hate navigating the Android UI or searching for their gadget? Just assign a QuickClick action. You can do the same for SMS.

Action Action

Tasker is the epitome of Android automation. While some Tasker tasks are truly automated in nature, some still need to be invoked manually. You can bypass the need to launch apps by assigning Tasker actions to volume button hotkeys.

Launch the app

You can also launch any application by specifying the QuickClick action.

Flashlight, Dictation, Music

A QuickClick operation will let you turn on your flashlight, start your dictation machine, or play any music on your device just by pressing a series of volume keys.

judgment

We tested this app on a Moto G running stock Android and a Galaxy Note 2 running stock TouchWiz. While the app works perfectly fine on the Moto G, it has some hiccups on the Note 2 when launching apps from the lock screen. We’re not exactly sure why that is. If for some reason QuickClick isn’t customized for your device, you may have a problem. But if it works smoothly, it’s a great app. So in summary, definitely and totally worth a try.
