Why Do My WhatsApp Messages Get Deleted Automatically

Did you open a WhatsApp chat to notice that the messages have been deleted or disappeared? Your WhatsApp is not hacked by others. WhatsApp has implemented several security protocols to delete messages from both sides. It could be one of the three reasons in the list below that are deleting your WhatsApp messages.

Whatsapp messages are automatically deleted

WhatsApp now allows you to delete sent messages. Maybe someone else deleted it or they are using the disappearing message in WhatsApp. Here are three reasons why your WhatsApp messages are automatically deleted.

1. The Disappearing Messages option is enabled

This option is quite useful in WhatsApp groups. You can use the Disappearing Message function in private chat. When the Disappearing Messages option is enabled, WhatsApp will make new messages disappear from the selected chat after 7 days. Recipients can still save these messages elsewhere. Anyone in that chat can change the settings.

If Disappearing Messages is enabled in a specific WhatsApp chat, you’ll see the messages automatically deleted after seven days. Here’s how you can turn off the option.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your phone.

Step 2: Select a conversation whose messages will be automatically deleted.

Step 3: Tap on the WhatsApp contact name at the top.

Step 4: From the Contact Info menu, scroll down and select Disappearing Messages.

Disable disappearing messages

If someone else has enabled the Disappearing Messages add-on, you’ll see a message like this shown in the screenshot below.

You can tap on it and it will take you directly to the Disappearing Messages menu. Disable the option.

2. Someone else is deleting the message

WhatsApp allows users to delete messages within an hour. Suppose you sent a message to the wrong group or chat or made an embarrassing typo; you can easily delete messages from both sides.

When the feature was introduced, WhatsApp offered up to seven minutes to delete a message. The company then increased the time frame to one hour and now the company is planning to move the limit to an infinite time.

Meaning, anyone can delete sent messages. It’s not as good as Telegram, leaving no trace of deleted messages. On WhatsApp, you’ll see a notification when someone tries to delete a message. This is how a person deletes WhatsApp messages.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your mobile or desktop and open any chat.

Step 2: Tap and hold on a message that you want to delete.

Select a message sent in the last hour. You’ll see the option to delete the message for everyone. Tap it and confirm your decision. WhatsApp will show deleted messages on both sides of the chat.

3. Sender is using View Once option

WhatsApp has implemented the option to send sensitive images as a Single View. The user can select View Once before sending the image and it will not show the image preview in the chat.

When trying to open such images in WhatsApp, you can see a preview, and when you return to the home screen, the media will disappear. You do not have the option to access the image now. Media is automatically removed from WhatsApp chat and servers. This is how one can use See Once in WhatsApp.

Step 1: Open a chat in WhatsApp to which you want to send the image as a Single View.

Step 2: Click the + icon and select an image from the gallery.

Step 1: Open the WhatsApp chat you want to backup.

Step 2: Tap the contact name at the top.

Step 3: Scroll down in the contact info menu and select Export chat.
