Downloading torrents, no matter what platform, is no easy task. You need to download a special client, search for torrent files on often shady websites with pop-up ads, and try to avoid malware while doing it all.
But on Android, I find torrenting nearly impossible. Because of advertising. And these are no ordinary pop-up ads that you just need to close the tab and you’re done. No, this is the more sinister way.
I found a pop-up telling me my phone needs to be cleaned/scanned. And they are downloaded via the current torrent site. That means I just lost the page I was on. Some go ahead and automatically launch the Google Play Store page for bad apps like APUS Launcher. After a third attempt to return to the original search page, I gave up.
Time to get an ad blocker for this.
Left: Pop-up ads ruin the torrenting experience. Right: Download torrents without any annoying ads.
All things torrent: Torrenting is hard, guys. But we are here to help you. Did you know it’s possible to torrent on Chromebooks? And can you use sites to route torrents? If you are a Windows user, it might be time to learn about uTorrent alternatives.
Search torrent sites with Firefox and Adblock Plus
To block ads globally on Android you need root access, but it’s much easier to block ads on websites. All you need is a third-party web browser like Firefox and an ad-blocking plugin. I used Adblock Plus but you can also choose uBlock. If you want a dedicated ad-blocking browser, check out AdBlock’s own browser which is currently in beta (nothing other than Firefox with the plug-in enabled).
Step 1: To do this, first download firefox.
Step 2: Launch the app and tap on the three-dot menu.
Step 3: Choose Tools -> add-ons -> Browse all Firefox Add-ons.
Step 4: Now, search ad blocker plus and install it.
Note: Needless to say, anything you download using these apps may or may not be legal. At Guiding Tech, we do not condemn or condone copyright infringement. So check the laws in your country before you decide to use any torrent-based apps, including the ones we’ve mentioned here.
Download torrents with Flud
I’ve compared torrent clients for Android in the past, and Flud comes out on top. Unlike apps like uTorrent, Flud is a really simple app with Material Design. It’s feature rich and doesn’t have the intrusive pop-up ads we all hate.
Download Flud and you’ll be done.
Good Ol’ Torrenting
Now, just go to any torrent site you visit frequently, feel free to scroll around without fear of pop-up ads. Go ahead, hit that search bar, type and you know what you’ll get? An actual search results page. Not pop-up ads for scanning extensions that may contain malware.
Welcome to the good life.
