How to Remotely Manage Music On Windows Through Android

Remote control

A few days ago, my sister and brother-in-law decided to have a get-together party, and they asked me to help organize the event. In just a few days, we had everything planned and arranged, but the last thing missing was music.

We’ve got a laptop and a music system that we can hook up to, but who’s going to stand in front of the laptop to shuffle songs between matches?

These are situations when your smartphone can justify the word ‘smart’ in its name. We’ve seen how you can control iTunes from your iPod touch or iPhone using the Remote Control app. Well, there are similar solutions for Android users as well.

So during the party, I never get close to the laptop but the tracks change, the music pauses when necessary, and everything goes so smoothly that it surprises everyone in the party. My sister’s curiosity caught hers and she walked up to me and asked, “How the hell does this work?”

So this article is for my sister and for everyone who wants to know how to control the music on your laptop wirelessly using an Android phone. The user’s music player here is Winamp, and an app called RemoteControl for Winamp lets you control Winamp playback over a wireless LAN.

Configure RemoteControl for Winamp

Make sure you have the latest version of Winamp installed on your system. Download the RemoteControl server for Windows and install it on your computer. After successful installation, run Winamp. You will see that the Remote Server will launch with it. You may get a firewall access window to give the application permission to communicate over the network. Allow it.

Now download and install the Android app for RemoteControl for Winamp on your phone and launch it. Please do not attempt to connect to the server before configuring the connection. On the android app, open the settings tab to start the configuration.

In the settings tab, enter your computer’s IP address and the port that will be used between the client and the server for communication. You can find both of these details on the Remote Control server running on your computer, as shown in the screenshot above. Leave the timeout to default and check Sign in automatically. Now you can press the connect button. If everything is done correctly, the app will successfully connect to the server and sync the playlist with your Android.

You can now control the song that’s playing directly from your Android. You can play/pause, skip tracks, control shuffle and repeat options, and control volume. The best part – you can see the song album art and progress in real time directly on the app.

On the playlists tab, you can view the current playlist and select the track you want to play next. You can even search for a song in a playlist from the app itself. One clever feature of the app is that it automatically pauses the songs when you receive an incoming call.
