Add a File Downloader to Safari for iOS 8 using Workflow

Automation, which every proficient user craves, is finally here on iOS. There are certainly apps like Launch Center Pro and Drafts, but so far there hasn’t been a relatively easy way to combine tasks/actions and create workflows. Now, thanks to an app appropriately titled Workflow, there is.

How to Create a Downloader Workflow

First, we’ll need to create a workflow to download files from Safari.

Shortcut: If you don’t want to follow the steps below, just open this link on your iOS device and click Setting. The File Downloader The workflow will show up in Run the workflow auto extension option.

But if you want to do it manually, and learn how Workflow works in the process, go for it.

Open the app and tap + to create a new workflow. From act search menu Get clipboard and drag it to the right screen.

Now do the same for Get the content of the URL And Save file.

This in the end Save file action will allow you to save the downloaded file to iCloud Drive or Dropbox. If you want to open the downloaded file in a compatible app instead, drag in Open...

Now tap Gear icon, name the workflow, select an icon and word Type select action extension.

Now go to Safari, tap the . icon Share and swipe right on the bottom bar, tap Than and activate Run the workflow extension.

How to use Downloader

The File Downloader workflow is now created and the extension activated. In Safari, go to the desired file download page and long press the last download link. From the resulting pop-up, select Copy.

Now tap Share button and select Run the workflow. All compatible workflows will be visible. Select File Downloader.

The Workflow app will now scan your clipboard, get the download link, and while the app is downloading the file, you’ll see a progress bar in Get the content of the URL part. Then the iCloud Drive file picker or Open.. menu will open depending on your settings.

From Location in the Document Selector you can also add Dropbox. Once you have decided on the location, export the file there and it will be saved.

If you are using Open menu, select a compatible application that will open the file and save a local copy.

That’s it. You now have your own Safari downloader.
