It’s 2013, who needs the command prompt at this point, right? Wrong! For electricity users in particular,

Unfortunately, the command line can still be useful, but the Command Prompt tool really lags behind the times. While Microsoft occasionally makes changes to the Command Prompt, it’s certainly not the main focus of the company.
The good news is that there are a lot of Command Prompt alternatives that use the same command line functions, but add some modern conveniences like tabbed windows, better transparency, copy and paste, etc.
Let’s get started now and take a look at three of the best command prompt alternatives available on the web:
ConEmu
Personally one of my favorite Command Prompt alternatives, ConEmu hasn’t been around very long (about a year or so), but has a lot of options and is highly customizable.
Like the idea of a transparent window? ConEmu has an easy to use System Settings menu that makes it possible. Want an alternative wallpaper? You can also do that.
Of course, Command Prompt has never been about beauty, it’s all about getting the job done. So ConEmu offers features like tabbed browsing and the ability to quickly rename each tab for organizational purposes.
Perhaps one of the best features – productivity wise – is the ability to create predefined lists of commands.
Once you’ve set up and saved the settings for your newly defined commands/tasks, every time you launch the ConEmu program, simply choose one of these easy commands from the drop-down menu at the top right. Of the screen.
PowerCMD
While ConEmu is my favorite, I have to admit that PowerCMD is also a pretty cool alternative.
I’m relatively new to this tool compared to ConEmu, but I quickly found that it does almost everything ConEmu does – and more. Sure, PowerCMD doesn’t have the ability for transparency or fancy backgrounds, but you can change the window color.
If you want tabbed browsing, PowerCMD offers it, but it goes a step further. You can actually split the screen into 2 – 4 boxes allowing you to run multiple windows and commands at the same time.
Needing access to quick commands, PowerCMD also provides timing this function and allows you to execute your set orders using quick keystrokes, like CTRL + F2.
Finally, while typing the command, PowerCMD will also give you suggestions and allow you to browse and find the folder you are looking for. This is especially useful if you’re not sure exactly where the file or folder is!
Control Panel2
Honestly, I don’t have as much love for Console2 as ConEmu or PowerCMD. For starters, it’s not nearly as powerful or customizable as the others. However, it still performs well and remains one of the best Command Prompt alternatives on the market, even if not as exciting as the first tools we mentioned.
For what it’s worth, Console2 still has things like window transparency or background images.
It also has a tabbed browser and many of the same powerful user features you’ll find with the other two.
While not as powerful as other consoles, Control Panel 2 still features a powerful Console Settings menu for greater control over this command prompt alternative.
So what won’t you get? Unless I’m missing something here, I don’t see a way to set up predefined commands for quick use. On the other hand, Command2 provides a similar level of functionality.

If you want the best visuals and fancy UI elements, ConEmu is probably what you’re looking for. Tons of powerful features without much focus on beauty? Then you’ll want PowerCMD. Ultimately, Console2 is great if you just want the basics but are still looking for a few improvements from the default Windows Command Prompt.
