For those who don’t know, private browsing refers to a mode of the browser where details like cookies, browsing history, etc. are not stored. When you close your browser, all that data is automatically deleted.
Previously, we talked about how to enable private browsing in Firefox permanently. This article will discuss a common method for adding a command line switch to a browser shortcut, allowing you to open all 3 major browsers (IE, Firefox, and Chrome) in private mode by default.
Start Google Chrome in Incognito mode (or Private mode) by default
1. Right-click the Google Chrome shortcut icon and select Properties.
2. Go to the Shortcut tab. In the target field, add –incognito (note that it’s a double dash or a dash) after the .exe (put a space after the .exe).
3. Click OK and start Google chrome. It will start in incognito mode by default. If you want to start your browser in normal mode, you have to edit the target field again. Just remove the part you added to that field. That’s it.
Start Firefox in Private Browsing mode by default
Repeat steps 1 and 2 above and open the Shortcut tab in Firefox’s properties. Add –private after the .exe”. Note that there is a space and this time, a hyphen before private. The target field looks like this:
“C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” –private
Click OK and double-click the shortcut icon to start the browser. It will start in private mode.
Start Internet Explorer in Private Browsing mode by default
Open Internet Explorer shortcut properties. Add –private (single hyphen) to the destination field. The target field looks like:
“C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” -private
Click OK and open the browser. If everything is done correctly, it will start in private mode.
This way you can add a command line switch to force the browser to start in private mode. Also, check out the switch to the iPad interface in Chrome by changing the user agent string.
