Microsoft Teams has become an integral part of many companies and organizations, especially those using Microsoft Azure and Office. That said, some Microsoft Teams users complain that they can’t see the Status or that the Status is not updated. Also, other users are seeing the Status Unknown error.
Status plays an important role in a formal setting. It allows the employee to know if the person on the other end of the line is busy, free, in a meeting, on a call, etc. Depending on the status set on the profile and visible to all other team members , a person can communicate or choose the right time to communicate. Messages can be drafted accordingly, letting the user know if something is urgent or not. Either way, Status, although a small feature, plays a larger and more important role.
Here’s how you would fix it.

1. Try Teams Web or Mobile
Microsoft Teams is available on all popular platforms such as desktop computers, web browsers, and mobile apps for Android and iOS. If you can’t see the exact status on one platform, try another for instant respite. Once you have completed the task at hand, try one of the solutions below to fix the Unknown or missing Team status error.
2. Reset state
If the problem is uncommon and only happens to one user, ask that person to reset the state. One can do it from the same menu where one sets the state.
3. Select the Group Only Option
Microsoft Teams has an option called Coexistence Mode that allows users who have upgraded from Skype for Business to coexist with users who directly join Teams. By default, it is set to Islands mode.
Open the Microsoft Teams admin center and go to Organization-wide Settings > Teams Upgrade. Select Teams only from the drop-down menu next to Coexistence mode.
Restart Teams once and confirm if the Status is now showing correctly.
4. Uncheck Register groups as chat app for Office
Another reason for the conflict could be because the Teams app is set as the default chat app for Office users. This means Teams is importing Status from the Office Suite, resulting in an Unknown or Missing Status issue.
Step 1: Click on your profile picture and select Settings.
Step 2: In the General tab in the left sidebar, uncheck ‘Register Teams as chat app for Office’. If this option is already disabled, try enabling it to sync Status correctly.
5. Delete the installation file
Following this step will reset the Teams app. That means you may have to sign back into Teams and reset some preferences. However, all data stored in the cloud will not be affected. The install.json is the file that saves all your Microsoft Teams settings. Deleting it will force Teams to create a new one.
Step 1: Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer and enter the address below to get to the file folder quickly. If you see errors, first check Hidden items in the View tab of File Explorer.

Step 2: Delete the file ‘settings.json’. You should back up the file before doing so. Copy it to the desktop.
6. Sign in again
By now, you have made and tried some changes using the solutions above. This can help with Inactive Status or Unknown Status errors.

7. Multiple group accounts
Are you a member of more than one group and signed in to more than one Team account? That can also cause conflicts. Sign out of all accounts, and then sign in to the account you need to use now, or where Status doesn’t show up in Teams.
8. Clear the cache for the Microsoft Teams app
Cache is usually responsible for causing all kinds of errors, this is true for all apps, not just Teams. Note that deleting cache files will log you out but will not result in data loss.
Step 1: Close the Teams app by clicking the cross button.
Step 2: Open File Explorer again (Windows key + E) and paste the address below into the search bar.

9. Clean reinstall
Some old system files or settings files may have been corrupted resulting in the error not showing the Status. In that case, you will need to reinstall the app. Download Revo Uninstaller to uninstall Teams and Teams leftover files. Then download a fresh copy from Microsoft and install it.
10. Update Microsoft Teams and Windows
Updating your Windows OS and Microsoft Teams apps will install the latest patches for any basic fixes. Status Unknown or missing error is not new and former, Microsoft has acknowledged the problem. However, it continues to annoy users. Hopefully it will be resolved soon if it’s still something on their part.
Status may be useful
Microsoft Teams makes a lot of sense and combines chats from all other Microsoft Office applications into one. Because it was rethought after the success of Zoom, Microsoft ran into some problems integrating Teams with the larger Office ecosystem. Over time, most of the bugs were fixed and everything worked as expected.
