How to Transfer the Samsung Secure Folder to a New Phone

If you have a Samsung smartphone and want to keep your photos and files private, Secure Folder is probably one of the easiest ways to hide them. In addition to hiding the files, they are also encrypted, ensuring that the files can be accessed. But what happens when you switch to a new Samsung phone? How do you transfer files to your new phone?

Well, that’s what we’ll be focusing on in today’s post as we show you how to transfer the contents of the Samsung Secure folder to your new phone.

But before we dive into this, let us tell you about some limitations.

It used to be quite simple to restore old files and apps on a new phone. You have to back up the old files and then restore that particular backup on the new phone. Simple as that.

Samsung recently removed the option to back up your files, apps and folders to Secure Folder after some bugs were discovered in some pre-installed Samsung apps including Secure Folder .

Although there is no separate backup option, we will have to go through the old route, where we will restore the Secure Folder contents to the main space, and then continue the transfer from there.

Note: Your files will no longer be encrypted as long as the file is outside of Secure Folder.

If you’re fine with your files remaining in an unencrypted space for as long as it takes to transfer the content, read on to see how to go about the whole operation.

Do the same for all other files. The process is essentially the same. Simply select the items, tap More, and select Move out of Secure Folder.

Once all your files have been moved to a new place, there are two ways to do it.

Method 1: Simple Backup

Step 1: Go to Settings > Accounts and Backups and select Back up data.

Step 2: On your other Samsung phone, go to Settings > Accounts & backup and select Restore data.

With this method, you just need to do a master backup of all your data to your Samsung account. This data will have all your apps, files and folders.

Obviously you will have to sign up with the same Samsung account on both phones.

The simplest way is to use Smart Switch. Using this feature, you can transfer content from your older Samsung device easily.

Method 2: Compress and back up individual files

If you don’t want to go the general route, the ideal way to do it is to select individual files and compress them.

zipped folder

One of the best apps for compressing files on Android is RAR. RAR belongs to the same people who gave us Winrar. The good thing is that it allows you to encrypt and protect your files with a password. It’s a free app. However, you can choose to donate if you are satisfied with the service.

Naturally, RAR needs the All Files permission because it handles file operations.

Step 1: Once the RAR is installed, open the app and go to the folder you want to compress.

Now, all you need to do is click the Ok button to create the RAR file. Select the Delete files option if you want to delete the files after the RAR folder is created.

By default, it will create a RAR file in the same folder location.

RAR offers the option to create both RAR files and ZIP files. However, according to the manufacturers, the former offers better compression ratio, data recovery and encryption.

Step 3: Once the RAR has been created, open Google Drive and select the Plus icon > Upload > My Files > Internal Storage. From there, go to the location where you created the RAR folder and tap Upload.

Once the upload is complete, all you need to do is download the same on the other smartphone and extract it. Of course, you’ll also need RAR on the other phone.

And as you guessed, move them individually to Secure Folder.

Start moving

The method mentioned above is possible for files, folders and pictures. However, when it comes to moving apps, it’s best to install a fresh copy, then move it back to the Secure folder, rather than this verbose method.
