Thankfully, Google has now rectified this situation by introducing Android Device Manager (ADM from here on out).
So what exactly does Google ADM do? While this method isn’t as comprehensive as some of the third-party tools out there, it can locate your device with an accuracy of about 20 meters, ring to find it, and even erase your device. After you sign in, ADM will ask for permission to use location data. After choosing Accept, it will connect to your device and will locate it.
Tip: Android 4.1 and later devices will also ask you to enable direct location access on the handset, by going to Settings > Location > Access Location.
