Apple devices, especially the iPhone, have a good track record of introducing effective security and safety features. Apple continues to double down on user privacy and safety – be it preventing cross-site tracking on Safari or setting up emergency SOS. With the iOS 16 update, a new feature called Safety Check appears to benefit iPhone users.
Safety Check lets you control what data you share with friends and family who use your Apple ID. This post will explain how to use Safety Check on iPhone and how it is one step ahead to protect your privacy.
We used an iPhone running on iOS 16 Public Beta for this post. Safety Check will be available with the iOS 16 update from September 12 onwards for eligible iPhones.
What is a safety check?
Safety Checks are part of Apple’s complex Personal Safety User Guide. It allows you to control all permissions, app and data access like Share location and iCloud data with contacts. If you are unfortunate enough to fall into an abusive relationship and your partner is using your Apple ID, you can protect your privacy by revoking all access to your information. This feature is very useful, especially for victims of domestic violence. Safety Check saves you the hassle of looking at separate app permissions and contacts access by acting like a toggle to reset all your iPhone privacy. you with just one tap.
How to access Safety Check on iPhone
Safety Check includes two functions – Emergency Reset and Access and Sharing Management. First, let us show you how to access Safety Check on your iPhone. Continue only if your iPhone is at least running iOS 16.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Scroll down and select Privacy and Security from the list of options.
Step 3: Scroll down and tap Safety Check.
Please note that you can always tap the Quick Exit option in the top right corner to stop the Safety Check process.
How to use Emergency Reset
Sometimes you share albums, music, locations, and other services with your family or friends. After a while, it was natural to forget about it and not revoke any rights. That’s where the Emergency Reset comes into play. It allows you to review and revoke all app permissions from contacts. This option also allows you to change your Apple account password and set up emergency contacts. Let us show you the step by step process to use this function.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Go to Privacy and security.
Step 3: Scroll down and tap Safety Check.
Step 4: Tap Emergency Reset.
Step 5: When the Splash Screen appears, tap Start Emergency Reset at the bottom.
Step 6: Tap Reset people and apps.
You can tap Reset to remove all sharing and access permissions in one go, or you can tap Manage access and sharing to select specific contacts and apps.
We’ll continue with Access and Sharing Management, but you’re still doing an Emergency Reset.
Step 7: Tap Continue at the bottom of the splash screen to Manage Access and Sharing.
Step 8: Tap the Search bar to look up the contacts that share your app info like Find My, Health, Photos, and Notes. You can then remove those contacts from your Apple ID.
If there are no contacts, tap Continue and then tap Continue again to go to the next step.
Step 9: Select the app(s) whose permission you want to revoke and tap Stop App Access.
Step 10: Tap Continue to move forward.
Step 11: Select the device(s) with your Apple ID and tap Remove Selected Devices.
Step 12: Click Add trusted phone number to receive the verification code. If the number has already been added, tap Continue.
Step 13: Click Update Password to update your Apple account password for better security.
If not now, you can tap Update later in Settings.
Step 14: Tap Add emergency contact to notify your contact(s) during SOS.
You can also choose a relationship with that contact while selecting a name from your contact list.
Step 15: You can either update your device password or tap Ignore.
Step 16: Once your Safety Check is complete, tap Done.
