WhatsApp is the first app that comes to mind when you think of instant messaging. Whether you use an Android phone or an iPhone, WhatsApp can easily become one of the frequently used apps. Of course, WhatsApp tricks also make it easy and convenient.
However, it’s not perfect, especially when it comes to photo sharing. You can try some alternatives to send photos at full resolution, but that involves extra steps. WhatsApp offers an option to change the quality of uploaded photos within the app. Here’s how you can change the settings on your phone.
What is WhatsApp photo upload quality
Whenever you send a photo to someone on WhatsApp, some amount of compression takes place. You can estimate the amount of compression by selecting the desired upload image quality.
If you have a good internet connection, you can choose to send high-quality images at all times. However, if you use mobile data, you may want to reduce the image quality to save bandwidth and send photos faster.
This option to set default photo quality on WhatsApp is available on both Android and iOS app versions.
How to change WhatsApp photo upload quality on Android
If you have an Android smartphone, this is how you can change the quality of your WhatsApp uploads.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your Android smartphone. Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner of the app.
Step 2: Select Settings.
Step 3: Now tap on Storage and data.
Step 4: The last section on the screen is “Media Upload Quality”. Upload image quality is set to Auto (recommended) by default.
Step 5: Tap Upload photo quality and choose the option that’s right for you. if you always want to send high quality photos, choose Best Quality. If you have a limited connection or a heavy connection, select Data Saver.
Step 6: Click OK.
If you want your phone to automatically decide what quality of pictures to send based on your internet connection, you can leave this setting in Auto mode. Note that this still does not guarantee that WhatsApp will share yours without loss of quality. To send a full resolution image, you can attach it as a document on Android.
How to change WhatsApp photo upload quality on iPhone
If you use WhatsApp on your iPhone, here’s how you can change your upload quality settings.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your iPhone. Navigate to the Settings tab at the bottom right of the screen.

Step 3: Select the Media Upload Quality option at the bottom of the page.
Step 4: Automatic (recommended) is the default choice. Change the option to whatever you like. The best quality has the least amount of compression but requires more bandwidth. Data saver is best suited when you are running low on data or in an area with weak connectivity.
Now that you have changed the image upload quality on WhatsApp, your photos will be sent with minimal compression. However, if you still want to send photos without losing quality, you can send them as files. Here’s how you can do it.
