You as a concerned parent do not want your child to visit any unsafe websites. We have covered the parental control feature on Windows of Windows Vista and Windows 7 before. This is probably the best way in Windows to restrict internet access.
But if you don’t want to go through all the options in parental controls and only intend to block certain websites, then you can do it in internet explorer.
Here is a step by step guide to block any internet explorer website.
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Go to Tools->Internet Options.
3. In the Internet Options dialog box, go to the “Content” tab. Under “Content Advisor,” click the “Enable” button.
4. Go to the “Approved Sites” tab. Enter the website you want to block in the box provided and press the “Never” button.
5. The name of the site will appear in the larger box below. Notice the red mark before the website name. It means the site is blocked. You can add as many sites as you want. Click OK
6. Set password and password hint. Now go to the “General” tab. Check the box next to “Supervisors can enter a password to allow users to view restricted content”. That means whenever you access a restricted website, you can access it by entering your password.
Alternatively, you can change the set password by clicking the “Change Password” button.
7. Now go back to your browser’s address bar, enter the name of the website you blocked. A dialog box will appear prompting you to enter the password. Now, the website cannot be accessed without the password.
Note: This technique is only useful if you use internet explorer as your primary browser. If you have installed other browsers like Firefox and Chrome then chances are your tech-savvy kid can switch to them and visit the website. However, you can use blockit in Chrome and other similar tools in other browsers to block websites. Even OpenDNS can act as a website blocker.
