How to Lock Android Apps with a Volume Button Pattern

We’ve seen many Android apps in the past that can set a password or PIN lock for other apps on your device. This way you can provide an extra layer of security for some of your sensitive apps like Messaging and WhatsApp. There are even features to hide the main app from the app drawer and provide a fake crash window to fool someone trying to gain unauthorized access to the app.

However, today I will talk about an application that shows another way to solve this problem. It’s called Oops! App lock. With this, you can lock apps on your Android, just like the ones we discussed before.

Unlike any of those, we won’t use pin codes or pattern keys. Instead, we will use a combination on the volume controls (Volume Up/Down) to get access to locked apps. Sounds interesting doesn’t it? So let’s take a look at the app and how it works.

Use Oops! AppLock to lock apps

So after you install Oops! AppLock, it will briefly introduce you to how apps work. Make sure you read everything as this is the only time you will see this screen. Next time you launch the app, it’ll be called K-Note in the app drawer, all you’ll see is a note app. This is a fake disguise, and only after you enter the correct volume key combination will you be able to access the core modules of the application. The default combination is pressing volume up three times.

Once in, the first thing you should do is change the default volume unlock pattern. Open app settings and select option Change lock pattern. Now choose the time period you want your combo to be. You will have to confirm the volume button pattern again and if it matches, it will be set as your new unlock pattern.

Now to lock an app, all you need to do is open the unlocked list and swipe the app to the left. Then the app will be moved to the locked list and next time you launch the locked app it will give you a blank screen or the last screen the app was on, just quit through this screen after entering the combination. Uninformed users won’t even know the app is locked and will just think it’s frozen or just taking too long to load.

You can change the default picture during app lock by swiping the locked app to the left. The Black option will show only black screen while with option Customs Optionally you can use any image from your gallery. One cool thing you can do is take a fake screenshot of the app and set it as the lock screen image. This will fool anyone trying to gain unauthorized access.

If you want to remove an app from the lock list, just swipe it right from Locked list and you will see it move to Unlocked List.

Conclusion

So that’s how to lock your apps with the volume key combination on your Android device. The idea behind the app is really unique and works well.

I think the only missing options are the ability to set the app as device administrator and forget the password, this can ensure that no one can uninstall the app without the correct passcode . So try Oops! AppLock and let us know what you think about it.
