HTC One X Rooting Detailed Guide Part 1: Unlock the Bootloader

Yesterday, I got my long awaited phone delivered to my door – HTC One X. This device really does a great job! If I had to describe this phone in one sentence, I would say that this phone has good looks and terrible performance. With a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM, it’s comparable to the processing power of the laptop I got a year ago.

Using this phone just for calling, texting, status updates and playing games is despicable. Devices like the HTC One X mean so much more, and it all starts with rooting. So today we will show you the first step to root HTC One X i.e. unlock bootloader.

Warning: This guide has been tested on an HTC One X, but I am still not responsible for any damage caused to your phone. If you don’t know what you’re doing, I suggest you call an in-house professional and ask him for help. Furthermore, unlocking the bootloader will void all or part of your warranty but trust me, it’s worth it!!

Necessary prerequisites

  • Back up your phone’s contacts, messages, and apps as this will factory reset your HTC One X.
  • Download and install the HTC Sync software on your computer.
  • Your device battery should be at least 70% charged.
  • Download and extract the Fastboot files to a folder on your computer. For simplicity, create a new folder at the root level of the drive and give the folder a simple name without spaces.
  • Sign up for an account at HTCDev and verify yourself. Free of course.
  • Go slow, no need to rush! Read a step twice if you must, but make sure you’re doing it the right way.

Let’s start then

Step 1: On your computer, go to the HTCDev homepage and log in to your account. After you sign in, click Bootloader unlock button to begin.

Step 2: On the right hand side, under Supported Devices, you will see a drop-down list. Select All other supported models and click the button Start Unlocking Bootloader.

Step 3: You will have to confirm some terms and conditions of acceptance which you will be redirected to the Unlock Instructions Page.

Note: Do not follow the instructions provided on the website. Just follow the people in the article.

Step 4: Now power off your phone and press Volume Down and Power to boot the device into Bootloader mode. Use your device’s Volume buttons to choose up or down to highlight Fastboot (This option is only available on HTC bootloader) then press the Power button. Now connect your phone to the computer with a data cable and place it on your desk.

Step 5: Now we will continue to work on the computer. First connect your phone to the computer and let Windows install the necessary drivers. After the driver is installed, open Windows Device Manager to confirm if the driver is installed correctly. Also, click the Proceed button you saw in Step 5 and then skip the steps until Step 8 on the HTCDev manual page (Yes, you have to skip the steps).

Step 6: Open Command Prompt on your computer with administrative rights (search for cmd in Start, right click, click Run as administrator) and navigate to the folder where you extracted the Fastboot files that we asked you for in the prerequisites section.

Step 7: Now type (copy/paste) fastboot device on cmd prompt and press enter. If your HTC device shows up, you’re all set. If nothing is returned, there may be some problem with your HTC One X driver.

Command 3

Step 8: Again on command prompt type (copy/paste) fastboot oem get_identifier_token and press enter. You will see a long block of text. Right click anywhere on the CMD prompt and select mark. Highlight and copy the text (select the text the same way it was selected in the screenshot ignoring all the information there).

Command 2

Step 9: Switch to the HTCDev page on your browser and paste the text in the text box under My Device Identifier at the bottom of the page and press the button send button.

Step 10: Now you will receive mail from HTCDev with unique Unlock_code bin file. Download and save the file in the folder where you extracted the Fastboot files.

Step 11: Now, copy/paste the command fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin in the command prompt to start the process on your phone.

Command 1

Last step: On your phone you will see a disclaimer stating that unlocking the bootloader may void your warranty. Use the Volume buttons to highlight your selection and the Power button to make your selection. If you select Yes, your phone will be reset to factory default settings and your bootloader will be unlocked.

Last step

That’s it! You have done that. You’ve successfully unlocked your HTC One X bootloader, but that’s just the beginning. Stay tuned as we tell you tomorrow how to root your phone. Before closing, I would like to share the official HTC One X video demonstrating its capabilities.
