HTC One X Rooting Guide Part 2: Steps to Root this Android Phone

Yesterday, in Part 1 of our rooting guide, we showed you how to unlock the HTC bootloader. Well, that’s just the beginning. Today we will see how you can root your HTC One X Android phone.

Rooted HTC One X

For those of you who are new to the Android family and don’t know what root means, it’s nothing more than a process to gain administrative privileges on your device. When you buy a new Android phone, your device is locked and you only have guest privileges on your phone. Once you root it, you can control and modify it however you want. It’s obviously a bit wacky and not for every Android user out there.

Note: Some bootloader images are taken with the camera, so they may be slightly blurry. This guide was tested on HTC One X and worked for me. You should, but as I mentioned, this isn’t for everyone and things can go awry in the process. So be cautious and don’t blame us if you brick your phone in the process. Having said that, this isn’t rocket science either, so we’re not going too far with the scares here.

Take care of these before you proceed

  • You should have an unlocked HTC bootloader. If you haven’t already, check out the first part of this tutorial.
  • Make sure your battery is charged at least 70%.
  • Download and extract the Fastboot file to a folder on your computer and install the HTC driver (If you unlock the bootloader, you must have it).
  • No need to back up anything, we will do a Nandroid backup in the process.

Let’s start rooting HTC One X

Step 1: Download both Clockworkmod (CWM) recovery files and move them to the folder in your computer where you extracted the Fastboot files while unlocking the bootloader. (both files are on the page we linked to)

Step 2: Download SuperSU’s ClockworkMod Flashable version and copy it to your phone’s SD card. (You can also download the zip file on this page..scroll down to find the zip file attached right after the first post in the thread)

Step 3: Turn off your phone. Now press and hold Volume Down + Power button to boot into recovery mode and connect your phone to computer via USB cable. Navigate to Fastboot option with volume key and press power button to enter.

Step 4: Open command prompt on Windows with administrative rights (find cmd in Start, right click, click Run as administrator) and navigate to the folder where you extracted Fastboot and the two IMG files mentioned in step 1. Copy/paste the command fastboot flash recovery r1-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-endeavoru.img and press enter. Fastboot will now install the Clockwork Mod for your HTC One X.

Step 5: Reboot your phone and then turn it off again to reboot into recovery (use Volume Down + Power button). In the bootloader, select RECOVERY to boot the phone in ClockworkMod Recovery

Step 6: Navigate to Backup/Restore to perform a full Nandroid backup of your phone. Nandroid Backup is the mother of all backup tools for Android and can restore every aspect of your phone if something goes wrong.

Step 7: Once the Nandroid backup is done, select Install Zip from SD card and flash CWN-SuperSU-vx.xx.zip (x.xx can be any number depending on the update you are using).

That’s it, you’ve finally rooted your HTC One X and now you can install apps that require root access. Moreover, the ClockworkMod that we flashed will help you to install custom ROMs on your device and make your device different from the usual crowd.
