Many users, when first using the Google Photos app, will be surprised to see their Camera Roll gallery or photo in the app. Since Google Photos is known to save images in the cloud, it’s clear that people can get scared when their photos are now saved online. Worse yet, if you’ve previously added some images to Google Photos from the web or the app itself, they’ll automatically appear on your phone.

How Google Photos Works

However, it differs from regular gallery apps in a way. For starters, Google Photos lets you store your photos in the cloud. This works if you enable backup in Google Photos settings. A Google account is required to back up data. So unless it’s not enabled, Google Photos just acts as a gallery app. Once enabled, all photos available on your phone will sync to your Google account.

How accounts work in Google Photos
For starters, Google Photos only works with Google accounts. However, you can also use it without an account—more on that below.
When you launch the app for the first time on your phone, you’ll notice your Google account automatically shows up in Google Photos. That happens if you use a Google account on your device. Now, if you have multiple Google accounts, they will all be listed in the Photos app. And you are not signed in to any Google account, you will be asked to sign in. You can do that or skip it.
Now you must be wondering if your pictures are uploading to all your accounts in Google Photos. The answer is no. The images that you see in Google Photos are the ones that are only available on your phone. The application will ask you if you want to enable the backup function.
If you want to enable it, you will have to choose a Google account. Once enabled, photos will only upload to that account. However, as mentioned before, any photos already in your Google Photos account will show up in the Google Photos app. You will need to switch accounts to view such images.
How to unlink Google Photos
Now we come to the main question — how to delete an account from Google Photos.
The answer to that question is complicated. First you need to ask yourself why you want to do so. Let’s examine the different cases with their steps that may work for your reasoning.
Case 1: Stop Uploading Photos to Google
If you’re worried that your photos will upload to the cloud, as explained above that will only happen if you have the backup settings enabled. And if you did, you can disable the setting without signing out of the app. After that, no new photos will be saved to the cloud. And existing photos will not be affected.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Open the Google Photos app and tap the three-bar icon at the top. Select settings.
Step 2: Tap Backup and sync and turn off the switch next to Backup and sync.
Case 2: Sign out of Google Photos
If you’re not happy with the online element of Google Photos, you can sign out of it. However, if you have multiple Google accounts on your phone, you can’t just sign out of one on Photos and keep the rest signed in. You will be signed out of all accounts. And when you do, images will stop uploading to Google if the feature is already enabled, and synced photos will be deleted from your phone, not from Google Photos.
Here’s how to sign out of Google Photos on Android.

Step 1: In the Google Photos app, tap the three-bar icon in the top left corner.
Step 2: Tap the small down arrow next to your name. Then tap the Use without account option.
The Google Photos app will now act as a proper offline gallery app. You should also try the offline and lighter version of the Google Photos app called Gallery Go.
Case 3: Delete Google account completely

In the second case, you will still see your Google accounts listed in the Google Photos app. You can tap on any account to start using it.
However, if you want to remove your Google account from the Google Photos app, you’ll have to remove it from your phone itself. In doing so, you’ll also sign out of other Google apps, such as Gmail, YouTube, Drive, Calendar. You will also lose all synced data on your phone, such as contacts, files in other apps like Google Drive.

The steps are the same for both Android and iOS.
Step 1: Open the Google Photos app. Tap the three-bar icon at the top. Then, tap the little down arrow next to your email.
Step 2: Select Manage account on this device.
Step 3: On your iPhone, tap the Remove from This Device button present in your Google account.
On Android, tap the Google account, then tap the Remove account button on the next screen.

Case 4: Switching between multiple accounts
If you want to back up your photos to another Google account, you should disable backup on the first account and enable it on the second. Here’s how to go about it.
Step 1: Access Google Photos app Settings from the three-bar icon at the top.
Step 2: Tap Backup and sync. Google Photos will show you the email id where the photo was uploaded.
Step 3: Turn off the switch next to Backup & Sync.
Step 4: Go back to the main screen of the application and tap on the three-bar icon. If a Google account is signed in, tap it, otherwise tap Add another account.
Step 5: Once you’ve signed in with your new account, once again tap the three-bar icon. Then select Install.
Step 6: Tap Backup and sync. Turn on the switch next to Backup & Sync. The photos will now upload to the new account.
Case 5: Sign out of Google Photos from other devices
Finally, if you’re signed in to your Google account on someone else’s phone and forget to sign out, your synced photos will show up in their Google Photos app if they switch accounts. However, don’t worry. You can log out of Google Photos remotely. To do that, you’ll have to unlink your Google account from their device.
By doing so, your friend’s phone will lose access to your Google Photos account. However, it also means that you will also be signed out of other apps on that device, such as Contacts, Calendar, Drive, YouTube, etc.
To do so, follow the steps mentioned below. They work on all devices like Android, iPhone and desktop.
Step 1: Open the Google device activity link on your device. You will be asked to sign in with your Google account. Use the same account you want to sign out of the other device.
Step 2: All your connected devices will be listed. Click on the device you want to unlink.
Step 3: Click Sign Out.

Is it safe to log out?
Correct. Signing out of the Google Photos app on your phone won’t delete any backed up data. Photos and videos will remain in Google Photos. You can view it by visiting photos.google.com on the web. Also, if you sign back into the Photos app, the data will reappear.
