We all know how Snapchat helped create the trend of temporary or disappearing messages. Now WhatsApp has caught up with that and offers disappearing photos and videos. So if you are wondering how to use them in WhatsApp, read on.
This feature is currently limited to a select few Android users implemented in the WhatsApp beta program. But it gives us a good idea of how WhatsApp is planning to implement disappearing media within the app.
WhatsApp calls it View Once and as the name suggests, it will allow the recipient to view the received media once and then WhatsApp will delete the media file from the chat. Below are the current requirements for using disappearing photos and videos on WhatsApp.
Download compatible WhatsApp version
As we mentioned above, WhatsApp hasn’t rolled out yet Watch once features worldwide. If the latest version is not available in your region, you can download the APK file from the source below and install it on your Android phone.
How to send disappearing photos and videos in WhatsApp
Once you have the relevant APK file installed on WhatsApp, the feature will appear in the app. Here’s how to use it.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your Android phone.
Step 2: Open the chat to which you want to send temporary photos and videos.
Step 3: Tap the attachment icon in WhatsApp and select Gallery.
Step 4: Select the photo you want to send.
Step 5: In the WhatsApp photo editing interface, you will see a message first written in a circle in the Add Caption menu.
Step 6: Tap a small circle and the photo is placed in single view.
When you send a photo, you and the recipient won’t see any thumbnails of the photo in the chat.
Similarly, you can select a video from the Gallery app and set it as a one-time view in WhatsApp.
Recipients will only see the Photo mentioned in the chat with the media size. When the recipient touches it, WhatsApp will download the photo and open it.
There is no limit to how long you want to keep photos open on WhatsApp. When you tap the Back button, the photo will disappear from the chat and you will only see opened status in the conversation.
The sender will also notice the same thing opened status in chat.
Messages Disappear vs. View Once
WhatsApp already has something called disappearing messages in the app. So how is Watch Once different from Disappearing Messages in the app?
The real difference lies in the duration and the overall implementation. With Disappear messages, the conversation is automatically deleted after seven days. Whether you see the message or not, the conversation will disappear after a week.
With Watch Once, the media just disappears after you watch it. Even when you open a photo for the first time in six months, it stays in the conversation.
Another difference is the export option. Using Disappearing Messages, the recipient can always export the chat over the weekend to keep the data stored somewhere.
With Single View, you don’t have the option to save images to the gallery. You also cannot forward images to others.
Disappearing messages will delete the entire conversation including messages and media. Single View is limited to sending photos and videos only. You cannot share passwords, OTPs or any other text as a Single View in WhatsApp.
What about security
This is where apps like Snapchat and Signal move forward with better implementations. Let us explain how. With Single View, the sender will not be notified if the recipient takes a screenshot or records the entire video with the screen recorder.
That’s a big limitation and something you should keep in mind before sharing sensitive media via WhatsApp.
How does one-shot view work in WhatsApp groups
The One Time View feature also works as expected in WhatsApp groups. Just turn on the View One Transition before sending any media in the group and you’ll be safe.
Again, we remind you that anyone in the group can take screenshots or record sent media using the screen recorder and further share.
In our experience, the See Once features are most useful in a personal WhatsApp chat.
Send self-destructing media on WhatsApp
WhatsApp’s One Time View is a step in the right direction. However, we feel the social giant should include text messages as a One-Time View in the final version. It can be useful when sharing passwords or other sensitive information in text form. Additionally, the vulnerability could affect feature adoption further.
It will be interesting to see how WhatsApp further improves the Watch Once functionality in future updates.
