I have always preferred rooted Android devices to non-rooted ones because of the infinite customization features that come with it. However, recently with so many features like app backup, themes, icon support and others coming to Android without root access, I didn’t root most of the devices used in recent times. However, with the OnePlus 3, unlocking the bootloader and rooting the device became quite necessary.
The reason is to overcome the poor RAM management that killed most of the apps and games running in the background even with the built-in 6 GB RAM. The developers on the XDA forums have mentioned that it is made to make the device battery friendly but I am not completely convinced with that claim. Well, thanks to the developers at XDA, things can be fixed, but that will require system level access on the OnePlus 3 and hence rooting is necessary.
So today I am going to share a step by step guide on how you can unlock the bootloader and rooted the device.
Note: Rooting OnePlus 3 does not void the device’s warranty, but I would still recommend going through the FAQ on their support page for details on the pros and cons of rooting .
Prerequisites
Before starting the rooting steps, here are some important points you need to take care of.
1. Since we will unlock your device’s bootloader, all apps and data currently kept by OnePlus 3 will be deleted and your phone will be reset as the original device so make sure you back up all the data you have on the device device. You can use Helium Backup ADB to backup apps and their data without root access.
2. Once done, activate Developer Options on your phone and activate search and detect errors via USB so you can interact with the device using the ADB command line. While you’re here, turn on the option with content OEM unlock. You will be asked to provide your device lock pattern or PIN when doing so.
3. Enable advanced reboot option from developer options which will give you option to reboot directly into recovery mode.
4. Download the ADB and Fastboot drivers from this XDA site and install it on your computer. Also, download and install the OnePlus 3 driver once the ADB and Fastboot drivers are installed.
Once all these points have been resolved, start the rooting process.
Part 1: Unlock Boot Loader
Step 1: Press the power button on OnePlus 3 to bring up the power menu and here select Reboot—> Bootloader and wait for the device to boot into Bootloader mode.
Step 2: Download SuperSU and TWRP Recovery for OnePlus 3 and save it to a folder on the desktop. Now, connect your OnePlus 3 to the computer using a USB-C cable. Having done that, open the same folder where you downloaded both files, press and hold the . button Change key and right click to select Open Command Prompt here.
Step 3: In the command prompt, type in Fast boot device and press Enter. You will get a random device name after the command is executed. If you don’t see it, there is some problem with Fastboot driver or installing OnePlus 3 Driver.
Step 4: If the phone is received with the above command, type the command Fast Boot OEM Unlock and you will get a prompt to unlock the device on your OnePlus 3. Use the volume buttons to select and continue with Correct. Please note that this step will wipe everything on the phone.
That will unlock your bootloader. Now let’s go ahead and see how to install SuperSU and gain root access.
Part 2: Install TWRP Recovery to Root OnePlus 3
Step 5: Now you will have to reset the device and re-enable all the settings that we did in developer options in prerequisites.
Step 6: Transfer the SuperSU file to the internal storage of your OnePlus 3 and reboot the device in Bootloader mode.
Step 7: Once the device is in Bootloader mode again, type the command flash boot fast recovery recovery.img and press enter. Once the flashed recovery is done, plug your device from the computer and use the volume buttons to boot into recovery mode. Now all that remains is root.
Note: Make a Nandroid backup of your device so you have a copy of the undistributed firmware in case you need it.
Step 8: In recovery mode, select Setting then browse to the location where you copied the SuperSU zip file and install it.
That’s all, you just need to reboot the device now and enjoy root access on your OnePlus 3. Now you can go ahead and install the custom ROM on your OnePlus 3 that you found on XDA . Just read all the points stated by the developer and keep backing up.
