How to Test Your Website Locally Using BitNami Stacks

Local servers have grown in popularity over the years due to the rise in popularity of blogging. Amateur bloggers, designers and people who want a local server to write on, have all started to explore what those servers have to offer them. As someone who has been to all three of these activities, I have learned from experience that it can get hectic. Actually fast if you don’t know what you are doing.

Luckily for us, the folks at BitNami have created an easy and fast solution for hosting our local servers. I’ve been working on figuring out Drupal themes lately, so I’m going to do some research on the Drupal stack. There are so many other stacks to choose from!

1 stack

Visit the BitNami website to download the stack you need to install. For example, if you wanted your Drupal installation to try out the new Drupal theme you just downloaded, you would download the Drupal stack. Install it like any other .dmg file. At the end of the installation, it will launch the BitNami stack. You will be taken to a page that looks like this. I’ve bookmarked this site and have been constantly accessing Drupal from there.

By default, it will take you to the Drupal installation. Now you may be wondering where exactly your settings are located.

How to Add/Remove Themes

You can find the Drupal installation inside the Applications folder. Go to drupal 7.0 > apps > drupal > htdocs > themes. You’ll find all your themes here, and you can copy and paste new themes as you wish. This is also where you edit your current theme and you can find the .css files inside.

BitNami Dashboard

You’ll notice something odd: When you restart your computer and need to use the BitNami stack, you won’t be able to access it! You really need to start the MySQL and Apache services from the BitNami Control Panel to start using your stack. So go to Drupal 7.0 inside Applications then double click on the Controls program. You will see this window, click Start All.

That’s it! Your BitNami stack will be live again and you will be able to test your site again.

You can now see how your posts will be formatted, how your designs will be displayed, and simply hone your writing skills in a real local interface on this local server. What are you waiting for? Download BitNami now and try it out! Best of all, it’s free so you have nothing to lose.
