Guest mode on Chrome is a cool feature. It allows you to share your browser with others without sharing your personal data like bookmarks, extensions, browsing history etc. Besides, guest activity will be deleted from your computer when they exist in the mode as never existed. So why not make it easy to launch Chrome directly in guest mode. That is what we will tell you here.
Normally, you have to launch Chrome in normal mode first. Then click on the profile picture icon and select Open guest window. Now that’s not a hard job. But what if you don’t want others to know that you’re giving them guest mode or you want to launch it quickly?
To that end, you can set Chrome to always launch in guest mode. Here’s how to do it on Windows computers and Macs.
Always Start with Chrome’s Guest Mode on Windows
There are three methods to launch Chrome in guest mode directly on Windows. Let’s check them out.
Method 1: Launch Guest Mode with Chrome Shortcut
In this method, you need to create a Chrome shortcut, then append a string to the Target text box. Then clicking on the new shortcut will open the guest mode directly. Don’t be confused. Here are the detailed steps.
1. Create a Chrome Shortcut
Step 1: You need to add the Chrome shortcut icon on the desktop. To do that, drag and drop the Chrome icon from the Start Menu on the desktop.
Alternatively, go to the Chrome installation directory. It is usually present in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Applications
Right-click the Chrome.exe icon and select Send To. Then click on Desktop (create shortcut).
Step 2: Open the desktop. You will see the newly added Chrome icon.
2. Add target in Attributes
Step 1: Right-click on the newly added Chrome shortcut icon on the desktop and select Properties from the menu.
Step 2: In the Shortcut tab, next to the Goal field, type -guest after the text Chrome.exe”. Then, click the OK button.

Renaming the Chrome shortcut will make it easier to distinguish the guest mode icon. This step is not required, but it will be useful to anyone using your computer. For that, right click on the newly added Chrome icon and select Rename.
Then type any name you like. For instance, I’ve named it Google Chrome’s Guest Mode.
4. Open Guest Mode
The steps above are a one-time task. Now, whenever you want to launch guest mode directly, double-click the guest mode Chrome icon.
Method 2: Launch Guest Mode from Profile Manager
Another way to launch guest mode directly is from the profile manager window. Here, the guest mode will not open directly, but you will be shown the profile management screen. You must click Browse as guest.
The benefit of using this method is that you don’t need to add multiple shortcuts for different profiles on the desktop. You can open a window and then browse from your preferred profile.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Add an off-screen Chrome shortcut as shown above.
Step 2: Right click on the new Chrome icon and go to Properties.
Step 3: In the Shortcut tab, next to the Goal box, enter the following sequence:
–profile-directory=”Guest Profile”
Then click Apply.

Step 4: Rename the shortcut by right-clicking the shortcut and selecting Rename. Name your choice.
Step 5: Double click on that icon and you will be taken to the profile switching screen. Click Browse as guest.
Method 3: Launch Guest Mode from the Run Dialog
In case you don’t want to add keyboard shortcuts but want to launch guest mode from any screen on your Windows laptop, you can do that too. To do that, you will have to resort to the help of the Run dialog box.
Press the Windows + R keyboard shortcut to launch the dialog box. Enter the following query
chrome.exe –guest
Then press OK. Chrome will launch guest mode.
Start Chrome with Guest Mode on Mac
While you can also launch guest mode directly on macOS, the process is a bit complicated compared to Windows. That’s because you have to create a script for that. Script shortcuts will not have the Chrome icon; it will have its own icon instead.
Calmly go. We’ll walk you through the steps that you only have to do once.
Step 1: You need to launch AppleScript Editor. To do that, launch Spotlight with the keyboard shortcut Cmd + Space or click the search icon in the upper right corner. Then type applescript editor and press Enter.
Step 2: Click New Document at the bottom.
Step 3: The AppleScript Editor window will open. Copy and paste the script mentioned below into it. (Scroll from left to right to copy the entire script.)

Step 4: Click File at the top and select Save from there.
Step 5: You will have to name your script and choose a location to save it. Enter a recognizable name such as Google Chrome Guest Mode and select Desktop as the save location under Locations. Select File Format as Application. Finally, click the Save button.
Step 6: You will find the script you just created on the desktop. Use it to boot into guest mode directly.
Extra Tip: Add Icons to Guest Mode Icons on Windows
If you’ve ever used Chrome’s multi-configuration feature, you’ve probably noticed that it adds a small icon above the Chrome icon. You can use the same feature to add an icon to the guest mode shortcut icon. That should make it easy to recognize the guest mode icon.
For that, follow these steps:
Step 1: Launch Chrome in normal mode. Then, click the profile picture icon at the top and select Manage people from the menu.
Step 2: Click Add person at the bottom.
Step 3: Enter a name for the profile. You can name it guest. Select an icon of your choice from the list. Check the box next to Create a desktop shortcut for this user. Then press Add.
Step 4: A new icon on the desktop will be created with the name you set above. Right click on that icon and select Properties.
Step 5: You need to remove the existing string after chrome.exe” and replace it with –guest in target. Again, make sure to leave a space between the two strings. Click OK.
Step 6: Your Chrome guest mode shortcut with the icon of your choice is ready. Double click on it to launch the mode.

The methods above allow you to easily switch to the guest profile on Chrome without actually launching Chrome.
