When you need some new profile pictures, there’s no better tool than a webcam and some excellent software to go with it. This software is usually built into many computers, but if you have a pre-assembled setup and have a connection to that cheap webcam, which you bought from the store next door, then you’ll need a tool like Cameroid to get the job done.
We’ll talk about Cameraroid a little later. Let’s start with Photobooth first, Apple’s built-in webcam solution for mac computers.
Photobooth for Mac
Photobooth is a simple (and often fun) piece of software that comes pre-installed on all Apple computers. Removing complicated settings and unnecessary options, Photobooth focuses on the experience. The end result is an easy-to-use and truly entertaining webcam capture program.
How does Photobooth work?
Apple keeps Photobooth simple. The interface includes a camera button in the center to initiate a snapshot, three alternate shutter buttons on the left (for regular photos, 4-shot bursts or video clips) and an effects button on the right. It is the effects included in Photobooth that are the star here. You are given a plethora of color options (sepia, x-ray, pop art, comics, etc.), stretch options (shown below) and backdrops (also shown below).
What does it look like?
I took some screenshots of myself with Photobooth, showing off the different pictures you can take.
The screenshot below shows all the different ways you can stretch your face in Photobooth. These photo effects really bring laughter, especially when you are with friends. There’s just something about having a giant nose that really makes people giggle.
Once you have selected the stretching option you want to do, you can simply click on it and it will go full screen. Click the camera button and SNAP! Instant fun. ????
Another cool feature that comes with Photobooth is the background image. You can place yourself against a variety of backdrops (shown below). So, if you’ve ever wondered what it would look like to fly in the air, Photobooth can show you.
Just click on the cloud backdrop and it will ask you to step out of the frame. Once that’s done, you’re free to reframe and take a photo.
Now, if you’re reading this from a Mac OSX computer, you’re all set. In fact, you’re probably taking a picture of yourself underwater as we talk. However, if you’re reading this on a Windows or Linux computer, you may feel a bit lost (and who can blame you?).
However, as we mentioned at the beginning, we have introduced you to an interesting online tool called Cameroid.
Camera Introduction
The camera has done a great job of bringing the functionality and fun of Photobooth to the internet. Cameroid can do almost anything Photobooth can do (more, in fact) and put those modified images on the web around the world so anyone can access it – including Windows and Linux users.
How does the camera work?
The camera offers a wide range of effects to incorporate into your photos. You can use most of the stretch and color effects available in Photobooth, as well as a shot of the original scene (like the dollar bill photo below).
Step 1: Navigate to Cameroid Official Website and click where it says “It’s free and easy. Get started now!”
Step 2: Click Allow to give Cameraroid permission to access your webcam.
Step 3: You should be able to see yourself now! Select the desired effects from the right sidebar. When you’re ready to take a photo, click the camera button in the sidebar, second from the bottom. That’s it! You’ve got yourself a photo.
Step 4: You may be wondering how to save those incredible photos that you are about to take. Cameraroid gives you options to save your photos to the Public Gallery, download them as JPG files, or print them out.
What does it look like?
Again, I’ve taken some sample screenshots showcasing some of the possible shots you can take with the Camera. Photo quality is great and I don’t see any difference between Cameraroid and Photobooth. Cameraroid is the perfect alternative to Photobooth and it even has its own style.
A gallery of available color options is shown below, as well as an example of appropriately named scenes.
This is my favorite photo option in Cameraoid. I always want my face on a bill.
Now that you have the necessary tools, let’s start editing profile pictures on your networks. You can end the “natural” look. Put your face on the dollar bill!
