How To Monitor Your Internet Bandwidth Using BitMeter OS

Not all internet plans are unlimited. And if you’re one of the unlucky ones with limited bandwidth, a good program to track your usage can be a real money-saver.

Fortunately, there is a good and free program called BitMeter OS. Available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX, BitMeter is an accessible solution to avoid excessive usage charges by closely monitoring your internet bandwidth.

Step 1: Navigate to the Codebox website to get the download link for Windows (the operating system I chose for this tutorial).

Step 1 Download Bit Meter Os

Step 2: Click I Agree to agree to the BitMeter License Agreement and continue with the installation.

Step 3: Select the folder where you want to install the program. For Windows, this is Program Files by default. Click Install once you have selected a folder.

Step 3 Install the program file

Step 4: Once BitMeter OS installs, you will be greeted with a bright green button as you see below. Go ahead and click on it to be redirected to BitMeter’s web interface which will open on your default browser.

Note: BitMeter OS is not in the cloud, it is only accessible from the computer on which you install it. It runs in the background, logs your bandwidth usage in bytes and uploads it to a database file accessible in your system web browser.

The screen is the first page that opens when you launch BitMeter. It shows you how much bandwidth you are currently using. Download speed is in red, while upload speed is in green. This is useful for monitoring your potential upload and download speeds.

History gives you a breakdown of bandwidth usage in minutes, hours or days. It can also access information from the past few months. It is also possible to export data to CSV file format.

History

The summary is simply a written summary of your bandwidth usage, broken down by day, month, and year. Your bandwidth is calculated separately for both downloads and uploads, as well as the sum of the two.

Summary

Queries allow you to search your bandwidth usage for a certain period of time. You can select the range by specifying the month, day, and year. It’s a pretty powerful tool, allowing you to access specific usage information easily.

Alerts is a neat little feature that allows you to set up alerts that can be sent to you when you exceed a specified network usage. It also has a lot of customization, offering the option to count only upload or download usage, or a combination of the two.

Options take BitMeter OS to the next level of customization, allowing you to personalize your BitMeter experience, by changing colors, applying Data Filters, etc.

Interest

Although BitMeter OS is currently in beta, it is an amazingly useful tool that meets almost any bandwidth monitoring requirement.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a “must have” feature that BitMeter hasn’t included here. Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments section below!
