With the advent of Windows 10, Microsoft is moving to a “Windows as a Service” (Waas) model, phasing out the old version/number based system. WaaS has its own pros and cons, but we won’t go into that. One of the key things about WaaS is that there will be constant updates released by Microsoft bringing in new features and bug fixes. Some updates will be big while others will be small.

This change has also caused a lot of controversy, with Microsoft forcing Home users to update to these updates, being the main cause. However, updates are important, such as the recently released 1511 update, called Threshold 2, in November 2015. This is the first major update since release 10. and brings a lot of new features. But what if your PC doesn’t update to it. Today we will see how to solve stuck Windows updates.
Basic check
We often overlook the basics and look for more complex solutions. To prevent this from happening, check that you have Deferred Upgrade enabled or set your internet connection to traffic metering mode.
We have
show you earlier
How not to receive Windows updates. So naturally, if you’ve made any of those changes, follow our guide (or any other) to get rid of Windows updates, you’ll need must roll back those changes.
30 days period
If you recently (Windows 10 is your cup of tea.
Non-genuine Windows
Windows receives updates from Microsoft’s servers, so a non-genuine/non-activated copy will not receive any updates (except critical security updates) when Microsoft check the status of each Windows installation when fetching updates.
For users who upgraded from Win 7/8/8.1 and now their Windows 10 is showing non-genuine, it’s a chicken and egg situation. You can use your previous key to reactivate Windows 10 but you will require update 1511 which you will not receive. To fix this, you will need to update it manually using the MCT method shown at the end.
Update-perception
Windows Update may get stuck downloading a specific update such as a new hardware driver, hotfix, or security patch. Major updates, such as 1511, require your Windows to download all previously available updates before it can continue. If the update is a driver, you can go to the vendor’s website to install it manually. For other updates, use the Windows Update Troubleshooter.
Some users have also reported success following this method:
Open Command Prompt and type the following two commands:
stop network bit stop wuauservnet
This will stop the Windows Update service. next go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all files and folders present there. Now open Command Prompt again and enter the following:
start wuauservnet start bit network
After restarting your PC and checking if the updates are working as intended
MCT to the rescue
This is the surefire and manual method to get update 1511 and resolve most Windows Update related problems, in case all else fails. MCTs can also be used to upgrade to Windows 10, as we have shown before. Let’s start.
Step 1: Download the Media Creation Tool from here.
Step 2: Open it up and select Upgrade this PC now. This will only download the update files needed for 1511.
Step 3: It starts downloading the necessary files. When it’s over, choose Keep old program files and press Next. Your PC will reboot a few times. To check if you have the latest build, press Windows key + CHEAPtype winner and press Enter.
Going through the MCT route should solve the problems for most users, but if you’re still stuck the last resort is to refresh your PC.
In front of the curve
If you don’t mind a bug or two and want to try out a new Windows feature before everyone else, you can try an Insider Preview Build from Microsoft.
These are the latest builds that are in beta and will be available to everyone later in the year. To try them, search Update Windows in the Start Menu > Advance settingbelow Get an internal buildclick Begin.
Warning: But beware, after you switch to Insider Build, switching back will require a complete reinstall of Windows.
Updates are not bad
The update gives you the latest features and bug fixes. It’s when a company doesn’t understand how to deliver them to the end user that problems arise. Forcing them on everyone is not a good idea. Has your problem been resolved? Please share your thoughts and comments with us.
