How to Search Using Filters in Windows 7 Explorer – Guiding Tech

One of the most important features of computers that I miss in my real life is the ability to find things. If I forgot where I left my bike keys, I would have a hard time finding them.. At that time I really wished there was a way to press Ctrl+F and type “bicycle key”. ????

While Windows’ basic search is enough, it’s only good if you know the filename. If you don’t remember the filename, that’s where the advanced search filters from Windows come in handy.

The advantage of adding a search filter

Search filters add a whole new dimension to Windows explorer search. Normally we search for files by name but using filters we can search for files by their attributes such as author or by file size or creation and modification date.

How to add filters to your search in Windows 7

Step 1: Open the folder you want to search. If you’re not sure where to find the file, just open Calculator.

Step 2: To start searching, place focus on the search bar in the top right corner of the folder. If you know the date the file was created or last modified, select Date Modified: or if you remember the approximate file size, select Size:.

Step 3: You can search a single file by adding two or three filters at once. You can also add keywords to refine your search results.

Step 4: When you finally find the file you are looking for, you can start your work but make sure you save it in a location that you remember next time.

Some keywords to refine your search

If you want to filter an attribute that doesn’t appear when you click the search box, you can use special keywords. These keywords help you narrow down your search for better results. Here is a list of all available keywords from Microsoft.

My judgment

If you have trouble recalling the filename or saved location of a document you worked on last week, adding search filters will definitely help you locate them quickly. All you need to do is collect back the date you last modified the file with the approximate size. Windows will do the rest for you. And if you can remember some keywords and apply them accordingly when searching for missing files, what better than that!
