Macs have a lot of unique applications. One of them is called Control Panel, which is an app that basically goes through your desktop and shows widgets. These gadgets can serve all sorts of purposes, from being a fast, useful, and convenient calculator to a widget that displays The Simpsons quotes (called HomerQuotes, now discontinued). By default, only four widgets appear on your Dashboard. Adding more of these utilities is certainly not difficult and can help improve productivity or offset stress.
First, you want to click on the Control Panel icon. If you don’t know what it is, you can see it highlighted in the image above.
Press the button with the + sign at the bottom left of the Control Panel screen.
A selection of other widgets will appear from the bottom of the screen. These are extensions that you can select and add by default. To download and install more add-ons, click Manage Extensions.
When the Manage Widgets dialog box pops up, click the More Widgets button at the bottom.
This will prompt your default browser to take you to the Dashboard Widgets website. There are a large number of perfectly compatible widgets on this site. In this tutorial, I will download the InterfaceLift Wallpaper widget.
Scroll down the web page until you reach the Browser Widget. In the categories, select Just for fun, then choose InterfaceLift Wallpaper. Click the Download button on the right.
Go to your Downloads folder or find the recently downloaded InterfaceLiftWallpapers1.0.zip folder in your Downloads stack. Click on it to extract it.
The file must be unzipped, with the Control Panel icon next to it. Simply double click it to run.
The control panel will confirm that you want to install the InterfaceLift utility. Click Install to complete the installation.
This widget will appear on your Dashboard. Use the left and right arrows at the bottom of the widget to navigate between photos. If you find an image you love, click on it and it will take you to the InterfaceLift website, where you can download the image and set it as your wallpaper.
Installing new widgets is not as difficult as it seems! The same goes for customizing the desktop, learning iCal shortcuts, or installing new fonts on your Mac. Have fun!
