. I don’t know how long it has been Amazon’s best seller..maybe since it was introduced a few years ago. Without a doubt, it is a revolutionary device. Who knows, maybe that’s how every book will be read in the future.
If you don’t own a Kindle yet (and neither do I), don’t worry. You can use one of the free Kindle apps/software available for different operating systems and mobile phones to read books in Kindle format. Today, Kindle versions of almost all hardcover/paperback books can be found.
This guide will talk about Kindle for PC and how you can use it to read ebooks for free. This software is provided by Amazon to Windows users and you can buy and read books on it, just like you would on the actual device. We’ll focus on setting up and fetching some free eBooks.
Start.
Part 1: Set up Kindle for PC
Step 1. Go to the Amazon Kindle for PC page and download the software. It’s about 18MB, so depending on the speed of your internet connection, it could take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes.
Step 2. Once you have downloaded and installed the software, you will be greeted with the following screen where it will ask you to register. If you already have an Amazon account, just enter your credentials and log in. If not, sign up for an account.
Note: You’ll need to link your credit card to your Amazon account, even if you’re buying a $0 product. Without that, you won’t be able to pay after purchasing a product on Amazon.com.
You will find that there are 3 free books available for you to read. I watched Aesop’s fables, Pride and Prejudice, and Treasure Island on my Kindle for PC home screen.
You can open one of these books and start reading to see how it is similar or different from reading an actual book. There are various controls, like highlighting, dictionaries, etc. that you can use while reading.
It’s about setting up Kindle for PC. You can check out the options and see what else Kindle for PC has to offer. That’s something I’ll leave it to you to discover for yourself. Now let’s move on to part 2 of this tutorial where we will see how to find $0 books on the Kindle store.
Part 2: Get free eBooks
The good thing about the Kindle store is that the collection is just as massive as Amazon’s main book collection. You’ll find all kinds of books, at all prices, starting at $0.
Let’s see how we can find some $0 books on the Kindle store.
Step 1. Click the Shop Kindle Store button located at the top left of your Kindle for PC home screen.
Step 2. It will directly open the Amazon Kindle e-book store in your default browser.
The books are arranged in order of their popularity. If you look to your right on the page, you’ll find a small Sort by drop-down menu. You need to select the option that says Price: Low to High.
You should now see all the $0 books available for your Kindle.
Step 3. Now you need to select the book you want to read, click on it and click Buy now with 1-click (or Buy now if one-click buying is not enabled on your Amazon account.)
You will need to sign in to your Amazon account. Then complete the purchase and Amazon will ask you to sync your Kindle with your PC to receive the book. You can do that by clicking on the little sync icon at the top, as shown in the image below.
Once the sync is done, the title will appear there, available for you to read.
That’s how you set up Kindle for PC and get some free ebooks on it.
In the next post, I’ll talk about ways to find great free ebooks for your Kindle. As you’ve seen, on Amazon the only way to find them is to sort them by price. But there is no way to see which are the most popular free games, different categories are available free games etc. We will explore that in the next post. Keep stable!
