Collaborating on Google Sheets documents is convenient, and inviting others is easy. That said, you may want to restrict others from editing or overwriting selected areas. A smart way to do that is to lock cells, rows, or columns in Google Sheets. That will prevent all those accidental edits or overwrites when working on the sheet with someone or letting someone else work on your document.
Note that locking rows and columns is not the same as freezing them. They are very different features. We will discuss how to lock cells in Google Sheets on the web in this post.
Let’s get started.
Lock cells and rows on Google Sheets Web
You can lock individual cells or use the keyboard/mouse to select multiple cells. It is your wish.
Step 1: After selecting the cells in the row and/or column, right-click and select Protect range.
Step 2: A pop-up window will slide open from the right side of the screen. You can enter a description and select to add or deselect cells. Select the Sheets tab if you have multiple sheets open. When you’re sure which cells you need to lock, click Set Permissions.
Step 3: Select ‘Only you’ if you don’t want anyone else to edit the sequence. Select Custom if you want to enter the names of the users who are allowed to edit the scope.
Click ‘Copy permissions from another range’ if you have locked another range of cells and want to apply the same changes (name, description, etc.) to this range.
Step 4: You will enter the name of the editor or people who will be allowed to edit the selected cells. There is also an option to set a warning message if someone tries to edit the selected range. Click the Done button when you are satisfied.
You can use the same settings to lock rows and even columns. Instead of selecting individual cells, you’ll click on a row or column header and then drag around to select multiple rows or columns. Protected scope is marked to distinguish it from unprotected scope.
However, if anyone tries to edit any cells in the protected range, they will get the message shown below.
Can you lock cells and rows on the Google Sheets mobile app
Well, there’s no way to lock cells, rows, or columns in Google Sheets on the mobile app. That applies to Android and iOS. There are no rumors that Google will add this feature anytime soon. But we hope it happens one day. Until then, you can use the web app on a computer or even a smartphone.
Note that locked cells will still look and function the same way. You will notice that the locked tiles are highlighted in the mobile app screenshot above.
Lock a Sheet in Google Sheets
You can lock entire sheets or documents in Google Sheets. Select the sheet that you want to pre-lock using the arrow icon next to the sheet name. You will then right-click the sheet name to select the Protect Sheet option.
Not only can you lock the sheet now, but you can also choose to ignore certain cells that you want to keep editable for others. Click the Except certain cells option to select them.
The rest of the process will remain unchanged, in that you will set permissions to define who can edit the sheet and add an appropriate description to explain what is happening or the purpose of the lock. sheet.
View all protected cells and worksheets
The right-click menu shortcut is great for quickly setting key permissions, but makes it difficult to manage large sheets with hundreds of cells.
Click Protected sheets and ranges in the Data menu. You’ll find a list of all the cells and sheets that the sheet owner or editor has locked.
Who can lock the umbrella
Cells or entire worksheets can be locked by:
- The owner or creator of the sheet.
- Anyone can edit the sheet, but they can’t get permission from the owner.
You can view or comment on the sheet, but you cannot edit or lock/protect it.
Hide locked rows, columns, and sheets
You are locking them down so that anyone accessing the document won’t make any unwanted changes. Hiding locked cells compacts the sheet. This comes in handy when those cells no longer require any updates or people have already viewed the data inside.
You cannot lock an individual or a range of cells. You will have to hide the entire row, column, or sheet. Just hover over the name and click the arrow icon to bring up the menu where you will find the Hide option.
Locks and keys
The lock feature in Google Sheets is handy if you’re working in a collaborative environment. You can control who can edit the content on a particular document and maintain data integrity.
