How to Backup Windows 8 Apps and Files Using RecImg

Recimg

Windows 8 introduced the concept of refreshing and resetting Windows to help users when it started misbehaving due to reasons like virus outbreak or any missed registry errors. Until Windows 7, users would have to format the computer and then reinstall Windows (who has time to fix the problem, right?) But now with the new version, things are easy.

While talking about Windows 8 Reset and Refresh feature another day, we covered how the two are different. While the Refresh option ensures your files and settings are kept, Reset keeps the computer working as good as new (factory reset). While the refresh option retains Metro apps and files, it cannot handle all installed desktop apps.

RecImg from SlimWare is a nifty application that works like Windows 8’s refresh feature, except that it preserves all files and applications installed on the system drive (including games). So let’s see how we can use RecImg to create and restore backups.

Use RecImg on Windows 8 to backup and restore data

Installing RecImg is very easy. After downloading the RecImg installer on Windows 8, make sure you are connected to the internet and launch it. Internet connection is important while installing the program because it downloads some files from the server during installation. After the program installs, launch it from the Start Screen. The interface is touch-optimized and minimalistic.

Backup and restore

To create a backup, click backup button on the main screen of the tool. RecImg will now analyze your system and ask you to select the drive where you want to create the backup image file. The size of the image will depend on the number of files and applications installed and therefore will depend on the time it took to create the backup.

Select destination folder

When you want to restore the backup, launch the app and select recovery option in the main screen of the tool. You will see available images that you can restore along with an option to reset the system. When you choose to restore an image, RecImg will restore your Windows to a specific condition with all files and applications intact.

You can also schedule backups using the RecImg settings and configure how many system images you want to store on your hard disk at a given time.

Behind the scene

What RecImg does is it uses the Windows system reset feature and combines it with its unique backup algorithm to give you a new PC with all your files and apps backed up. I tested this tool on my Windows 8 and it was able to restore all the installed apps in the system folder.

Conclusion

RecImg is a great tool to create and restore Windows 8 backups but there is no way that we can customize our backups. I mean, I can’t choose the apps I want to include to make the backup image file smaller. Furthermore, during recovery, there are no advanced options to choose from in individual programs. If the developers are listening, I’d love to see the ability to select apps while backing up.
