How to Reduce Size of JPEG Photos Without Loss In Quality

The problem with taking pictures with your digital camera is that they are very large in size and therefore you need to reduce the JPEG size before it can be shared on services like Flickr or Picasa. You should also reduce the size as that will make it easier for your friends to download or view them online.. Larger photos take longer to load. But the reduction in image quality is something that none of us like and therefore we often tend to ignore the resizing part.

We have previously covered tools like RIOT and Image Resizer Power Toy that can reduce the size of your photos while keeping the original quality but there can be situations like university network cafe for example where bandwidth is not an issue but when logged in as Guest or Limited User you cannot install any of these tools you need one of these and

JPEGmini is one of the online photo optimization tools that claims to reduce the size of JPEG images (JPEG format only) by 5 times without any loss in quality or resolution. You can go to JPEGmini and start using the tool right away, but you should create an account first. You can also connect using your Facebook or Google account, where JPEGmini will ask for your email address in the permissions window.

Create Account

Once you’re in, click the big blue button that says Upload Your Photo to start the upload. The tool will ask you to select and upload all the photos you want to compress and create a new album for them. Each album you upload can contain up to 1000 photos and can be up to 200 MB in size. You can upload as many albums as you want.

Upload album

After all photos are uploaded, they will be processed by JPEGmini. Processing may take some time depending on the size of your album, but once processing is complete, you will be notified via email. This page will show you the original size of the album along with the compressed size.

Download Send to Flickr Picasa

There’s no way you can download individual photos from the album, and you’ll have to download the entire zipped album in zip format. There is an option to upload albums directly to Picasa and Flickr.

Note: The album once created will be available for seven days and then it will be automatically deleted.

My judgment

As you can see in the screenshot above, I tried this tool on one of my photos and it went down to 0.99 MB from about 3.2 MB. When I previewed the compressed image and compared it with the original image, I was amazed. I mean, if I ask any random person if he can tell the difference in the two pictures, I’m sure he won’t be able to tell which one is the original and which one has been processed.

The only thing stopping me from using the service is that it is an online tool. If they launch a similar desktop tool, I’m sure it will be a huge hit. What do you think?
