How to Quickly Share Wi-Fi From Laptop With Virtual Access Point

I love playing games on my Android smartphone and I use my 3G connection to download. But some games require you to connect using Wi-Fi before you can download them. Previously, I didn’t have a Wi-Fi router in my house and my smartphone didn’t support Ad-Hoc networks either (until you root it and apply a patch), and that’s why I’m looking for a way to create a virtual hotspot using my laptop so I can share the Internet wirelessly afterwards.

There are some tools like Connectify and Virtual Router that claim to provide a solution to the above problem but for me they created other problems instead of solving the problem I had. Right after I installed Connectify, I started having random problems with the infamous Blue Screen of Death.

Luckily, I came across a web service called Virtual Hotspot (found on Raymond’s blog) that offers an easy solution using the built-in virtual Wi-Fi technology in Windows 7. So let’s see how we can create a virtual hotspot and share the internet connection without breaking a sweat.

To get started, go to the Virtual Hotspot and enter the SSID (any name) and password (minimum eight characters) and click the Enable Soft AP button. Also, make sure you have the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment installed on your system as it needs Java to work.

Make a connection

When the Virtual Hotspot page asks if you want to run the Java Runtime Environment on the page, select the always trust option and click the Run button. The tool will now create a virtual wireless network connection using the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter.

Run Java

Once the hotspot is up and running, it’s time to share the internet connection. To share the internet connection with the newly created hotspot, open Control Panel—>Network and Internet—>Network Connections. You can also open it directly using the link available on the Virtual Hotspot homepage right after you create a new hotspot.

Now right click on the newly created virtual adapter and click on Properties.

Property

In the Share tab, select the option Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection and select the connection you want to share. Now click on the OK button and confirm your action.

share

Your internet connection will be shared instantly. I tested the newly created hotspot on my smartphone and I can connect to the Internet without any problem.

Once you’re done, click the Disable Soft AP button on the Virtual Hotspot page.

From now on, whenever you create a virtual hotspot, the internet will be shared by default. If at any time in the future you want to revoke the share on the internet, you can do that by changing the properties of the virtual adapter.

My judgment

Creating a virtual hotspot and sharing the internet has never been so easy. No software, no wizards, no annoying error codes, just open a browser and press a button, that’s it (and some simple steps in the network share center).

So what do you think of the trick? We would love to hear.
