How to Restore Deleted or Lost Bookmarks With Xmarks

Xmarkslogo I recently bought a MacBook Pro and while setting up Chrome and Firefox on it, I noticed that I had a duplicate set of bookmarks in the bookmarks toolbars of both browsers. I checked the bookmarks page in Chrome and everything is copied there too.

I also seem to have lost some unreasonable bookmarks. And before I could figure out what was wrong, duplicate bookmarks also mysteriously appeared in Firefox and Chrome on my Windows 7 laptop.

It didn’t take me long to figure out what caused this mess.

It is the simultaneous use of Chrome Sync, Firefox Sync and Xmarks. I use Xmarks to sync my bookmarks across all the browsers I use, and have also ticked the bookmarks option in Chrome and Firefox browser sync settings. It didn’t matter on one computer but when I installed the same browser on a new computer and set everything up from scratch, the problem happened.

The first step on the road to recovery is to uncheck the bookmarks checkbox in syncing both Chrome and Firefox. Once that was resolved, I had to find a way back to the old state where all my bookmarks were neatly synced across all my browsers and this time, across different computers. This is where Xmarks comes to the rescue. It stores old copies of bookmarks and that’s a lifesaver.

Of course I could fix it and also documented the whole process, that’s what this post is about. So see how easily Xmarks helped me recover deleted or lost bookmarks.

Step 1: You need to log in to Xmarks web interface. There, on the navigation bar, you will find an option that says Tools. Click it.

Step 3: It will display a long list of old bookmark sets along with the date and time when it synced them to the server. This will help you identify the exact set of bookmarks you are trying to restore.

Step 4: Select the set you want to restore.

Step 5: Xmarks will warn you that you will replace your current bookmarks with an older set. Click Yes.

Step 6 – Important: Now this is the important part. The above sets will only restore old bookmarks for the specific browser in which you opened the Xmarks website. In all other browsers, you will need to go into the settings of the Xmarks add-on and then manually download the bookmarks from the server. This will ensure that cluttered bookmarks in those browsers are replaced with the correct set of bookmarks.

All it takes is a click of a button.

Xmarks will ask if you want to download from the server. Click Download and you’re good to go.

That’s how Xmarks helped me recover my lost bookmarks. I strongly recommend each and every one of you to use Xmarks for all your browser bookmarks synchronization needs. It’s the best and safest way to back up your bookmarks and access them whenever you need them, no matter what browser you’re using. Oh, and all of this at a reasonable price – $0. ????
