It turns out that the seven-button remote that comes with your Apple TV is more capable than you might think. The new Apple TV can link the Siri remote to your TV so you can use the volume up and down buttons to control the sound. Previously, to control the audio, you had to switch to your main TV remote, then switch back to the Apple remote to navigate.

With certain TVs, the Siri remote can even turn the TV on or off, so you only have to use a single remote, but you must have a newer TV with the HDMI-CEC menu setting integrated. For now, we’ll just focus on how to make the volume control work.
Note: This will not work for older Apple TVs or older remotes. This feature is for new 2015 Apple TV and later with Siri remote.
How to Adjust Volume Using Apple TV Siri Remote
You need to pair the remote control with the TV first. To do this, go to Setting on your Apple TV. Then tap Remote controls and devices.
All the ways at the bottom, note that Volume control is set to automatic on the right. (This screen is where you can also adjust the remote control’s sensitivity.) Select this so you can change it. On the next screen, click Learn about new devices…for Apple TV to pair with your existing TV remote.
Now, take out your regular remote and follow the on-screen instructions, which will ask you to press and hold the volume up button until the progress meter is full. Once that’s done, do the same for the volume down button.
The Apple TV will then ask you to name the remote. It named it Customs by default, so if that happens to you you can click Finished and be on your merry way. Otherwise, spell out the name you want to give it, which is especially important if you have multiple remotes to pair.
back on Setting screen, you will see that you are now using the custom remote pairing to control the volume. Using your Siri remote, be sure to press the volume up and volume down buttons a few times to make sure the remote works in harmony with your TV.
Above Volume controlyou will see an option that says Turn on your TV with the remote control. Unfortunately, this feature is grayed out on my TV because it is a feature that requires HDMI-CEC. If this is not grayed out, it means your TV is HDMI-CEC enabled, so by all means follow the setup process here to give your Siri remote control a go. You have full control over your TV.
